    Octain

Got a 97 f150 4x4 with a 4.6 and 5 speed and 355 gears. It calls for 87 octain but it don't run good on it. Runs like a top on 89 though. Is the 87 octain really 87 with the ethanol in it? Says in my owners manual not to run 86. Will 89 be ok to keep running in it?

If it runs good with 89 run 89, it wont hurt anything and is just a higher rated fuel. 87 is 87 no matter what it just depends on a lot of factors. Not sure where you live, but here in Utah 87 octane doesn't even exist. We have 85 and cars that call for 87 run just fine on it. Has to do with the elevation that we are at.

Some vehicles are just a little pickier about what they run on and it sounds like yours is one of them.

What do you mean it "doesn't run good on it"? Is it pinging, knocking, bucking, kicking? Unless you are adjusting the timing, your truck won't tell the difference between 87 and 89

I live in Virginia and it just seams to run a little ruff on 87. Not a bad ruff but you can tell a difference. And owners manual says not to run anything under it if in high elevations.

Air pressure at that altitude is only at about 13.5psi as opposed to 14.5 at my alt (95' ASL). Most gas stations are running E10 in all grades of gasoline. Other than a routine check-up, if your truck runs good on 89, give it 89. It should be on 87, however.
