The work of the Zaporozhye nuclear Power Plant (NPP) was proposed to be stopped in order to avoid a nuclear catastrophe. This was announced by the permanent Representative of Russia to international organizations in Vienna, Mikhail Ulyanov, in Telegram.

This initiative was taken by the authorities of Zaporozhye due to the ongoing shelling of the facility by the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), the permanent representative noted.

In addition, according to TASS, Ulyanov also called on the Ukrainian side to stop attacks on the NPP and guarantee the safety of the participants of the mission of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for their visit to the station.

Earlier, Sergey Mukhametov, a senior lecturer at the Department of Oceanology of the Geographical Faculty of Moscow State University, revealed the consequences of a possible radiation leak at the Zaporozhye NPP. He allowed the accident to be "more serious than Chernobyl" and stressed that in case of a leak, he would have to resort to blocking the North Crimean Canal.
