    Gott's Mod - 2004 4.6L F-150

I did the Gott's air intake mod on my truck today (a 2004 4.6L F-150 XLT, new body style). The idea of the mod is to improve airflow by increasing the diameter of the pre-filter pipe from 3"-2" tapered to a 3" straight pipe. Although this is a 'How-To' for a 2004 4.6 it should be approximately the same method for the 5.4L and some older models.

The Gott's mod is said to do four things for your truck:
    1) Increase Horsepower
    2) Increase Fuel Economy
    3) Improve Throttle Response
    4) Sound 'cooler'/deeper

    Materials:
    -3" pvc/abs pipe 5" length
    -3" pipe coupler
    -5/16" socket and wrench
    -Slotted driver
    -Rasp
    -File

    Procedure:
Remove the filter side of the air intake from the two bottom mount pins and the side wall. Use the slotted screwdriver to unclip the 'snorkel' from the filter housing. The detached filter housing and snorkel will look something like this.

The space where the new pipe and coupler will go looks like this.

Once the filter assembly and snorkel are removed begin bringing two opposite ends of the 3" pipe to an oval with the rasp. Only do this on a out 3" of the 5" length. Once you have the pipe filed down to an oval shape try fitting it in place where the snorkel was and file it down accordingly. The pipe should look something like this after filing.

Once the pipe is filed smooth and fits in place slide it in to the sidewall approximately three inches, then slide the coupler onto that and the filter housing into the couple. Reassemble the air filter housing and tighten up the coupler clamps with the 5/16" socket and ratchet.

After everything is fastened in place it should look something like this.

    Conclusion:
The Gott's mod is an easy and inexpensive mod that took me no longer than an hour to complete. I noticed no change in sound below 2500rpm but at higher revs i noticed a marginally deeper sound. Fuel economy and horsepower is anyone's guess, but im skeptical there will be a noticeable improvement. I felt a slightly better throttle response at high revs, and for $10 and an hours work, that is good enough for me. I hope this will be helpful.

Nice write up man, let me know if you do see a difference in mpg's later on. I might do this one if you get some good improvement.

I'm not expecting too much in improvement really. seems like the consensus on other forums is .5 - 1mpg gain, tops. but even if it helps the motor breathe a little better its worth the $10 or $15

Very true, I think I'll do this in a few weeks when I get my schedule figured out.

might be a stupid question, but any chance of a Gott's mod adversely affecting fuel economy?

Uhh it shouldn't, if anything it should be a slight increase cause you have more airflow? Do you have it all tight, no leaks in the connection? How cold is it there right now too?
