Hey all- now that the warranty is done with my truck, I was wondering what everyone feels about where you take your truck for service. Do you have a favorite mechanic, or do you take it to the dealership service?

Well. Loaded question.
A dealership have several techs. Each time u take it in. You will get a different level of service as each tech has there own level of intelligence. Some techs take pride and some don't. Same with a big shop. If you go somewhere and have great service. Return to that place and that tech.
I have customers who ask for me all the time they come in. As they know what they will get.
But from what I have seen. Going to a dealer ship vs a small
Place. The dealer has the money to make things right if **** goes wrong. I have seen small shops close or tell people to kick rocks.
Either way u decide. You can always come here for advice

I'm biased because although I'm a Ford guy and love Ford, I've had bad experiences with 3 separate Ford dealers with service, plus what my family has experienced. There is only one Ford dealership I'll take my truck to because they are really nice and do great work, plus give discounts, only problem is they're not the closest around since I'm in SoCal and there's 50 billion Ford dealerships lol. I take my truck to a local mechanic my family has gone to for years, it's family owned and we know the owners pretty well now. They do great work and have fair prices, so I take my truck there for the basic maintenance stuff, whatever I don't do myself. But when I had my transmission and coolant flushed, I went to Ford. Basically what I'm saying is, I'd go to a mechanic for the small basic stuff, but any major or vital service, take it to Ford because they know you're vehicle the best.

Just go to a dealership that cares and doesn't just treat you like a $ sign.
Personally, I think there is no better mechanic than the owner. Servicing things are easy and cheaper if you do it yourself. For bigger things, I would take it to a dealer (primarily because around here we have backwood rednecks that will use duct tape to fix things). My truck is 16 years old and has been to a Ford dealer 3 times. But for things such as rotation, fluids, brakes, oil, etc. Do it yourself. You know you're getting it done right and have peace of mind. Plus you save money.

Well. I do agree with Alex. Doing it yourself. Saves u money. And that's kinda what it's all about. Taking care of what takes care of u. I've had my fair share of workin on my truck with my 03'. Now? With the newbie. I intend to take it to ford for pretty much everything only for the simple fact it's under warrenty. All the extras will also b done by me and my svt tech. Programming and dyno will b done by me as well. But all in all. If it's under warrenty? Utilize it. That's what it's there for. After warrenty. Why not do it yourself
All great points. Much appreciated. I'm having trouble with the auto running boards. They won't retract. So with all the snow- and the buildup- you get the picture. Not really a do it myself thing. But a dealership may fleece me, but a local mechanic may not know what to do. So I'm stuck
^X2 for that, I wouldn't want to mess with those things and if they came with the truck when you bought it, then take it to the dealer.

Loyalty is important. So, if you work at the dealer......The Dealer here, however charges about 3 times what my guy does and my guy is better. The first time I met him I got a referral from my body guy. If you ever saw the motorcycle jumps on Red Bull my body guys son builds and rides those ramps. Anyhow, I had the mechanic do some work and asked him if he could run it over to the body shop for a new bumper when he was done. The mechanic said sure. I said "hey, do you need some money? He said "You know Phil right?" "Nope, I'm not worried about it." That was in the late 90's and loyalty is still everything and so is a good mechanic. Hope you like the story.
