    Upgrades for Towing

I have a 1994 F-150 5.0l Automatic 2WD. I need to haul my horse from Louisiana to Maryland. I'd like to keep my truck and just upgrade whatever is necessary instead of getting another truck. Total weight of the trailor loaded is just shy of 6000lbs. Is my truck able to handle that kind of hauling and if so what should I do to make sure it can make it there without any problems? I'm thankful for any advice. Also, I have about 6 months before I have to drive him there so I have time.

Hey Cory. I'm not very familiar with your year truck. But what I can tell u will help u. Google is your friend. Lol. You can google your truck by year make and model and also see what your towing rate is. 6000 lb trailer? Is that with your pal in it? Cause I'm sure he's about 1100 lol. I can also point u in the right direction to upgrade your truck Stiffer springs. Air ride. Helper springs. Which I don't recommend but they do work. Leme know what ya figure out and we'll go from there

Do a trans service with new fluids and such, I would also consider adding a transmission cooler if not already equipped. As long as the engine is in good working order the transmission is what the concern will be, a trans temp gauge will be important to monitor trans temps because heat is a killer of auto transmissions. Keep it out of OD and just watch the temps and you should be just fine.

Trans cooler is a must. Or at least a trans temp gauge to monitor gauge. Over 260*F, the fluid breaks down and can ruin a tranny

How would you go about running the gauge to the trans? Does a programmer tell you the temp of the oils?

If you have an oil temp probe in the trans, which not many older vehicles have

In yours yes, a programmer will display trans temps but the OP would have to install his own temp probe.

You mean 160*F? Or actually 260*F? Cause I thought when I asked you a few month ago about it you said 160*F.

It might be 160. I get oil temps and trans temps confused. Lemme check..

Edit: Okay, trannie fluid starts to break down at 235*F. At 260*F you're toast.
Oil starts to get frothy at 180*F and 200*F is its killzone.
