    Upgrade differential

Hey all, I currently have a 2010 F150 4.6L V8 3V 4x2 with 3.55's and I'm thinking about upgrading my differential to either a 4.10 or a 4.56 and I am going to buy a tuner for the speedometer and I'm currently running stock tires, may upgrade later down the road, no pun intended! And I'm wondering the key differences between the 2. What I'm looking for is accelerating, city driving, highway driving, towing, off-roading, mpg, and anything else I might need to know! Thanks!

Personally the 4.56 and even the 4.10 are pretty deep in my opinion. I have no experience with a 4.6 v8, but with those gears you will hurt your economy by quite a bit especially on the highway. I would suggest thinking about 3.73s. You will get more grunt for towing, acceleration, and even off road without sacrificing very much highway MPGs.

If you are set on deeper gears, I wouldn't go higher than 4.10

If you had a 4X4 and were going to throw 35's on it I'd say 4.10 or 4.56. However with the smaller 4.6L and 4X2 3.73 will do just fine. If you're considering mpg as a factor don't even consider 4.10's or 4.56's, they're intended to put more power on the ground without care for how much fuel that takes. Ford usually put the 3.55 with the 4.6 because it's a good match for its power and towing rating. I've thought about switching to 3.73's in my '05 4.6L, but that's it. It would help with acceleration and towing, but I'd see a drop in mpg's slightly. Also the 3.55 is fine for off-roading, it's standard with the FX4 Off-road Package, but again you have a 4X2. This is just my 2 cents though. Also make sure when you choose a tuner that it has the option to reset for larger gears, I've seen many that can reset tire sizes but I've never noticed a feature for gear ratios (granted I was never looking for that option though).

Tbh. If your not changing anything on your power plant. I would just stay where u r. If u insist on a lower gear. Your fuel economy will change for the worse. However. A 3.73 will make u jump as I'm guessing u want to. With that being said. Guess what happins after that? Stuff breaks lol
If u were going rock crawling and bigger tires yada yada yada. I'd go 4.56. If you put a supercharger on and were slayin silverados. I'd say 4.10. But for what u want. 3.73 will do the job far better than anything else. Good luck

    5Star tuned.....

My father has the 3.73 in his 5.4L V8 and I love the acceleration, that's what I want!

    4.10's rock

    Upgrading to 4.10 gears.... - F150online Forums

Mileage with old 3.31 gears (hwy) = 21mpg
Mileage with new 4.10 gears (hwy) = 20 mpg
    - with new gears, it hardly ever needs to down shift for overpasses, unlike the 3.31 gears where it was constantly shifting.

I had 3.73 with the 5.4 and stock tires (30.5") and it was good. But when I went to 32.9" tires it was not. So I changed to 4.10 and it was then amazing.
