They adjust your power band. Long tubes will give you more power and torque up top, but it pulls it from your low to midrange RPM curve. Shorties do the opposite.

Shorties are a better option right?

Sort of, it depends on your application. What Alex is saying is that with shorties you reach your peak torque output at a lower RPM, like how car companies say 400lb-ft @4500 RPM, you might get there at 4000 RPM (just an example). So shorties would be better for things like towing because your engine won't have to work as hard to get a trailer up to speed. Where as long tubes do the opposite and cause you to reach your maximum torque output at a higher rpm than stock, which would be better for racing because you can stay in a gear for longer and get the most power by doing so. Am I right for once Alex? Lol

For trucks, I think shorties are the preferred type of header. Most car guys go with longtubes for top-end power (speed).

So I was right then? Yay!! Lol. Another question then, do they automatically put shorties on diesel trucks? Because I know they reach their max power output at low RPM's.

They put whatever is cheapest to put on. Maybe Joe can chime in here, but you can get performance shorties that offer better performance than stock.

They do go on the cheep for diesels lol. Shorts will give a little bit of power. And I mean a little As far as showing up on the dyno? Maybe 5 hp or less. It just breaths better that's all.
Now. Long tube? That's where u will see the power increase. It's not out of this world power we r talkin about here. Noticeable? Barely. Now sound? Worth every penny. But your not gonna get a race car out of headers. No matter what u put them on. Your engine will b able to breath better. And that helps a little. How did I do professor? Lol
