    5.4 Ticking

Hey I'm new to the F150. I have the dreaded tick what I can't find an answer to is how dangerous is this condition? I am about to undertake this task and just want to make sure that it should be fixed or catastrophic failure is the end result anyone with experience with this or any Ford techs with knowledge of this please get back to me.

The truck has 72k on it. The ticking is louder with the hood open and can be heard on both banks. Sounds like a small diesel engine and only really obvious outside the truck. Even though I hear it with the hood closed its not as loud. I have no MIL illuminated or any unusual gauge indications. I have read in some posts it's time to change the cam phasers when there is a loud rattle on start up which I don't have ( yet).

My other thought was to sacrifice the horsepower and put a set of lockers on it and problem solved...

    Any ideas or suggestions?

Yeah that's what my diagnosis is leading me too but I can't find any info other than 1 post of some one having a complete engine failure because of this? Do you out anyone else know of total engine failure because of this is common or just an irritating noise that I can live with for a while?

Clicks and tapping are never good or even neutral. I seized an engine ($6000 fix) just two months ago, and this sound is one I'm not going to ignore again. Take it in.

I would have it looked at, however, the "diesel knock" is a well know problem with the 5.4L, especially I believe pre 05. I have an 04, and I've had the slight diesel knock since I got it....it has 130,000 on it and I bought it almost a year ago with 117,035. Again, if you think that it is an issue, have it looked at by a competent mechanic that you trust. Mine does it more when it is cold, and usually goes away a couple minutes after start up. And I don't think that it ever did it this summer when it was hot....

I have the 4.6 and mine makes the "tick tick tick tick" noise, this morning it was chilly and it kept comeing and going while ideling. I have 183,000 aprox. miles. I hear its common for the 4.6/5.4s to do this though.
