Right now im currently getting 9 mpg out of my 98 F150. It has the 5.4 and is 4x4. My friends tell me i drive really slow so i dont think its my driving style, but it's always possible. Is anyone else getting really bad mileage out of there's?

That's pretty low. What's the maintenance record? Do you have oversize tires? It could be a combination of a few things.

Stock sized tires with good tread left and service record is unknown. We bought it used from a Chevy dealership. The saleman knew the owner and said he was an older man who kept all his cars in good shape, but its hard to say if anything has been done to it or not. the engine was spotless when we got it. Had 94,000 miles, 98 now.

I'd do a routine tune-up on it. New plugs, COPs, clean PVC valve, intake, air filter, MAF (easiest and will help the most), etc, etc.

Ill have to do those and see if anything changes. I forgot to mention that there's no pipes after my muffler. Could that effect it? I have people tell me no and ive had people tell me yes, but not enough to notice a difference.

no, all the piping does is redirect the CO

Sounds like a sales speech and not the truth. Hopefully a good tune up will help you out a little bit.
Im right there with you at 8-12 in mine. Granted its a 400 HiPo from 1977. Not exactly efficient.

I was talkin to a buddy of mine the other day about plug n play mods. Initially he got about 13-18 (on a good day) and used the plug n play and got around 20-22 out of his 5.4L. Just another thought to help, but start with the tune up first that should help alot

I was actually looking into those. I'm not sure if it's what I'm gonna do, but I'm considering it

plug and play what? programmers? there is NO WAY IN HELL a programmer will bump you up 7mpg city. at the most you will see a 1mpg, MAYBE 2 mpg increase. I have a programmer, electric fans, air intake, lightweight driveshaft, P&Ped intake, and UDPs. all of those together netted me about 3mpg, on a good day.

you guys need to realize the #1 thing that hampers fuel consumption is air resistance. the second most important is weight. you can mod your engines all day long but unless you lower your truck (less parasitic drag) or chop that frame or something, you are not going to see any major differences.

and im calling BS on 22mpg out of a 5.4L. I used to get 19/21 before this E10 crap, and that was driving like a grandma in flat Florida. Now with E10 im getting 17/19

I agree with what your saying, but theres no way im gonna lower my truck or shorten it. I need the 4x4 along with the ground clearence up here in WA. Lots of bumpy up and down dirt roads here

Again that's just what I was told, I don't have a programmer so I don't know what it would do, but your knowledge sounds more reasonable than the info I got.

dont expect to get any phenominal numbers. just your average EPA rated numbers for 14/18 for a 4x4 5.4L. anyone saying they are getting 20+ in a 4x4 5.4L needs to learn basic math.

I don't get that bad of mileage unless I'm towing or hauling something

Well professor. I can add basic math. Passed it got a 65. ( in my Chris rock voice). Lol. I get 18-20 in my fx4. Lots of tweaking. But it runs well. Around town I get about 14-15 but highway is nice

I'm still lmao.
