Transmission shifts hard

93 F-150 with e4od transmission 4.9 straight six 32000 original miles. Transmission shifts very hard and sounds like it may be shifting a little late. At higher speeds 50+ transmission will sometimes sound like it comes out of gear and goes right back in. Think it may be the speed sensor. Any suggestions.

Well it could possibly be the speed sensor but then again it could be a few other things as well. Your best bet would be to troubleshoot and then rule out the possibilities. Usually there will be a certain volt usage from the speed sensor. You should be able to find the specs for that online and then check with a volt meter. That will give you an idea if its working correctly or not. Should be a reading for park, reverse, neutral (usually the same as park) and drive.
