whats messed up is with the ranger i got 11-12 mpg with the 3.0 and when i put the 5.0 in i got almost 18mpg on 35s lol

Only time gas mileage was really pissing me off is when i was doing residential construction and burning a tank of gas in 4 days JUST travelling to and from jobsites (no extra driving AT ALL)...
And gas was at like $1.35 a litre so it was costing me like $85 per fill up

its never been off road it was a show truck now its his daily driver its fast! im not sure whats all done to it i know it has head studs sct livewire tuneing and 150hp injectors hits 40lb of boost and shifts at 4500rpm! and the trannys built

The best thing to do is order an AOD service manual for the year of your rig and read through it a couple times. There are some good writes up there of how to do it yourself for you to look at to. take pictures are you come apart. And you should be good to go. The older automatics are easier than people say when it comes to rebuilding them. I might be able to get a hold of a used manual from a friend for you if you need. Good luck!
