Electronic Locking 3.73 rear gear

I am new to the forum and am a loyal ford owner. I just ordered a 2012 King Ranch with the max towing package, which inculdes the 3.73 electronic locking rear end. I was told that one change for 2012 was the ability to use the locking rear end while in 2 wheel drive. My question is whether the vehicle must be in park to engage the locking rear end, or can you shift into the locking fear "on the fly"? Also what is the procedure to engage 4 wheel drive and the locking rear end? Thanks in advance.

You can engage it "on the fly" but I do it when i am when stopped for safety
