I have a 2001 f150 4.2l 4wd and I just put 285's on. It looks great and rides great but I can feel a little loss in acceleration. I was wondering if anyone knew any good ways to improve that. I've heard regearing is good but I don't know where to start with that

----------

I just realized its in the wrong section. Sorry about that I'm new to forums.

Don't worry about the wrong section, it's all good lol. As for more torque, you can re-gear, but it'd be the expensive route. I'd recommend getting a programmer or a tune for a few hundred bucks. It'll account for the bigger tire size and give you a little more get-up.

Thank you very much. I'm not sure my parents would let me do a programmer the last one I had did not go too well. But is there a way I could do a junk yard regear or something like that?

Changing gears won't actually give you more torque. It just changes when the torque comes in.

Oh right that makes sense. Would an air intake do anything?

Not really. Unless you matched it with an exhaust. Even then you're not adding what I would call noticeable power. I know you're against it, but as far as bang for the buck you can't beat a tuner.

Any brand recommendations? I had a jet performance that went wrong

I'm not really sure on the 97-03s, but I know Joey has SuperChips for his 03

Ok. Does cherry bomb make an air intake. I have the glass pack on my truck

Gears gears gears! Its the most overlooked aspect after a tire size change and it will be the biggest bang for your buck, especially with a V6. As stated gears dont increase torque, they just give the engine a better mechanical advantage over the tires at a given RPM. Tuners are great, I run them on both my trucks but they will not make up for loss power from larger tires, again especially with a V6, I know this from experience.

What tire size did you go up to? I have the 3.55 open. What would you recommend to go up to

When I went from 29's to 33's with my 4.0 V6 ranger I re geared from 4.10 to 4.56. To know what ratio you might need to get you back to near stock final drive ratio I would need to know what size tires you were running stock.

I'd go with:

1.) Gears
2.) Programmer
3.) Gotts Mod

That sounds like a good plan. Does gotts mod really do all that much?

If u hve the 3.55. I would go with the 3.73 locker rear. I have it I've done some upgrades to it since new. But deff a start in the right direction. That will make u a little more snappy lol. And as Dan stated I have a superchips cortex tuner for my truck. But. My truck is not stock. Superchips is a great product. However. Edge makes some really trick stuff these days. There customer Svs is awesome. And they helped me with my version of an 03 150. And that cherry bomb although sounds cool. Ain't givin u no power. It's holding u up. Try flowmaster or bassani. There tech has far passed the tech of the mighty old faithfull glass pack And the gotts mods is way cheaper than a cold air kit. Gears gears gears. As my buddy ^ up there just coined. Lol. Good luck. Keep us posted

So to use the 4wd I have to get two sets of gears and a transfer case?

I believe just front and rear gears, not a transfer case. DJ was just saying that if you had 3.55 in the front and 3.73 in the rear, it'll kill your transfer case.
