So I'm kinda curious to how this thing works and how often it has to be replaced. Does it get changed out the same time my engine oil filter does?

The auxiliary Trans/oil cooler with the factory tow package, or just the basic one? And the transmission oil cooler does exactly what it's called, cools the transmission oil lol. I believe it goes thought the radiator as well (separate lines from the coolant and oil), if not it goes through the smaller radiator thing (but I'm pretty certain that's for the A/C). And the filter gets changed when you change your transmission fluid, recommended every 30,000 miles by Ford.

Yeah, some radiators (dual core) have a built-in trans/oil cooler line hookup so you can take advantage of the fan.
