I need to look into buying a beater so that it doesn't cost me so much to go see my boy. Although his going to be excited when he sees my truck.

my '04 4.6 is only getting about 13.5mpg so 12 seems about right for a '91 5.0. but i may be wrong and have bad mileage

I'm not sure this is the 1st truck I've ever owned and I think the newest vehicle I've ever owned besides the sunfire I once owned.

----------

The good news is I just landed a good job that pays decent so I should be able to afford to gas now :p

baldyman
05-19-2013, 10:21 PM
you could probably find some mpg specs for your truck when it was new and compare that to its current mpg. older vehicles with higher miles tend to run a little less efficiently in my experience. a good job is definitely helpful if you want/need to drive a truck

pockets
05-19-2013, 10:24 PM
Thank you for that tip. I'm definitely going to look up specs, or at least try too. And yeah a good job is definitely a pluse their is no way I could afford this truck before hand.

fueleconomy.gov is a good starting point, however keep in mind when the EPA tests were done on our engines, they were done on non-ethanol fuel. Meaning that E10 you stuff down your tank kills about 2-3mpg. I remember back in 2009-2010 before Florida mandated E10, I used to get 500-550 miles a tank, getting 22mpg in my V6. Now I see 18 if I'm lucky.

pockets
05-19-2013, 10:54 PM
So when I look up specs on there should I add 2-3 mpg to get an idea of what it use to be?

----------

Ok so 11 mpg in town and 15 mpg highway. Avg. 13 mpg so 12 mpg isn't to bad for its age. I'm glad I looked up the specs. now.

----------

I'm not sure what the ethnol levels are here I think it's somewhere between 5-10% though. And it sucks that you're getting 4 mpg lower then what you use to.

My old '96 f150 with the 5.0 got 18mpg highway, it was two wheel drive, but then the torque converter started going along with the y pipe so after that it was still about 12 I got about 17 highway with my 2006 4wd 5.4 but that was cruise set on a nice pretty flat highway

RhinoZ24
05-20-2013, 04:08 PM
The only time I got 17 was when I went to the desert with my 2005 4.6L 2wd, but that had a mountain pass to get over lol, so it would probably be higher without that.

Do you have the 36 gallon tank? I have the 27 gallon (gauge only registers about 24 because of Ford's "reserve tank") and even when I'm getting 17-18 on the highway 200 is just less than a half a tank used.

That'd be 20mpg if you ran it dry, so it's a little bit more than 20 if you hit 500 with gas left, that's pushing the mileage limit of the 5.4 especially for an '03.

Nope same blue just in the shade instead of the light. And that was when I first put on the wheels I have now, the ones from an '06 FX4, replacing my stock '05 XLT ones. I didn't have the center caps for them yet so the lugs were exposed for a bit until I got them. I guess I should update my profile pic lol.

My 5.0 gets about 18-19 normal. I did a trip to the mountains last weekend with a half a cord of wood in the back and got that up. Down? 23. And that's the best I've ever seen that # climb yet
