My little brother showed up today and surprised me with this.

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/04/18/eqezenam.jpg

I was blown away! We are going to install it this weekend hopefully.

Do any of you know if the K&N CAI can be used with a boss 302 manifold swap?

That's a nice younger brother you got there lol.

I wanted to look into this. Does this increase power and fuel efficiency?

I'd say minor, you're not going to see day and night differences but it helps. It's best with a turbo because you can hear it better.

Don't expect too much. And if you drive more city it'll do more harm than good.

Hahaha well I'm screwed then.

how will it do more harm than good in the city?

RhinoZ24

Because the trucks come with a CAI already basically because they are hooked into the fender wall where they pull outside air, so its colder than the engine compartment air. With the open air box on these "CAI's", when you're stopped at a red light, your intake is sucking in hot engine air from the engine compartment, and that's bad. They do have closed box CAI kits however, so if you drive more city they're a good choice.

----------

Hahaha well I'm screwed then.

Don't worry too much, it's not going to affect your performance that much, you probably won't notice a big difference. Once you get moving from a stop, fresh air will enter the compartment and then you'll get the benefits of the CAI. However hot starts may be a little more difficult.

The most I've seen a intake gain a vehicle is about 2rwhp on a good day.

Wait a sec... That thing came with a Boss intake already on it? Now I'm jealous lol.

I think you'll need to do some fab work to fit the boss intake. At least that's what it seems to be from what I've read.

They make a boss flip kit for the truck. It's bad ass

Ya I've read about em before. It makes me wonder if Slick's truck is tuned cause everything I read says u need a tune to get the a/f right with the manifold swap.

You should snap a few shots of your engine bay Slick. I curious to know a lil more about your rig.

Big Slick
04-19-2013, 07:55 AM
I don't have a 302, but I looked up the part and its the cheapest 50hp you can bolt on. I was only asking if K&N will work with it because if not I'd hate to install it only to rip it out at a later date and have to buy a new CAI.

You are correct about having to tune the engine with the 302 though. In order to do the install correctly I would say it will cost probably close to $2k from start to finish with shipping included.

Seeing that I have a truck payment for the next 5 years and I'm sure this will void my power train warranty, I will be holding off for a long time unfortunately. One day though.

Wait... I thought you went with the '11 XLT with the 5.0L. Am I mistaken?

Big Slick

No you're right, but i don't have a 302.

BFEB
04-19-2013, 12:20 PM
The 5.0 is technically a 302 lol

Big Slick
04-19-2013, 12:41 PM
Really? I didn't know that. I thought it wasn't a 302 unless you upgraded the manifold?

RhinoZ24
04-19-2013, 12:52 PM
The 5.0 displaces 302 cu. in. Lol. It's a 302, just not the same as the Boss 302.

BFEB
04-19-2013, 01:16 PM
The "old" 302 actually displaces 301.44 cu in and 4940 cc if you put the math to it lol and its actually closer to 4.9L lol it's all in the way it's rounded.
The coyote is 301.79 cu in and 4951 cc. This is due to the difference in the volume of the cylinders.
The old is a 4" bore and 3" stroke and the Coyote has a 3.629" bore with a 3.649" stroke.

I know it's a lot of math, but I actually like math so its cool to me.

----------

This is all using the old school 3.14 for pi. Not the newer version that has more decimal places lol

U should definitely post up a pic of your motor.

Cheater. There's no pi button on my calculator. Just old school 0-9 and the plus, minus, multiplication, and division. Don't need all that fancy crap lol

Installed.

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/04/22/e4y9esyq.jpg

Easy install, took maybe 30 minutes for my brother and I to install. It's amazing how much louder the truck sounds now when you gun it. Noticed a better throttle response right away. Wish I had more money to spend on parts.

Ya I noticed a lot louder exhaust and crisper throttle response when I put my Airaid CAI on mine.

Also, it still pulls cold air from the fender. The lower portion of the air box is used with this installation. The top is just open now and the engine can breath easier.

Right after I bought it. I swaped it over from the EB since the air boxes are the same.

How's the drone inside the cab with a flowmaster 40 series muffler?

Jersey_Joe
04-23-2013, 07:01 AM
It's not bad. U can hear it slightly. But the outside is more dominant. Your style truck has a great insulated edge. Shouldn't b too bad. But flowmaster is the deff way to go

RhinoZ24
04-23-2013, 07:20 AM
It's a little loud, but you get used to it l. It depends on the setup too, it's louder with the side exit compared to the rear exit.
