What's y'all's two cents on which is best and why?

It depends on what you do really. Manual is supposed to be 1mpg better than automatic since you control the shift points, but it depends on your driving style. Automatic is better for towing, well IMO lol. Honestly I can't tell you which one is better unless I know what you're planning to use the truck for.

Mainly just driving it around from work and school and what not. Will be doin muddin. I won't be towin often but ill pull every now and then

I'd go with automatic then, because you don't want to have the threat of stalling while mudding. But that's just me.

For what you're doing you should just get an auto. All the driving on normal roads and city would get tiring. Standard trucks mainly benefit you when towing. IMO anyone who has a standard has learnt for themselves why they needed it. Or they just bought for fun and realize the hard way it was useless to them.

i drove manual for 5 years...everyday...automatic is so much nicer especially in traffic

I prefer the control over the convenience. Manual transmission for me.
Plus it's better on gas and for towing. There's also a brief pause between when you hit the gas and the vehicle actually moving on an automatic that I truly despise.

Well. I like both. In my truck auto fer sure. But my hot rods 6 speeds fer sure. All tremec.

Well imma small town guy and there ain't much traffic, I will be on both pavement and on dirt roads and In fields, I was kinda lookin towards manual for the gas Savin. I know it's not a big difference but imma be glidin in neutral a good bit and I won't be gettin a newer one so no ecoboost

Actually, manual-automatic would be absolutely ideal.
Something like paddle-shifters or the push-shift-shifter-thing would be badass, indeed.

RhinoZ24
04-14-2013, 10:00 PM
I don't think they had that in F-150's lol. The new ones have the Selectshift transmissions (if equipped) that are kinda like a paddle shifter, you just push a button to up shift or downshift.

Yeah, I was just daydreaming, haha.

I had nothing but standard trannys until I bought my 08. Everything since then has been auto. Gotta say its pretty rare that I miss shifting myself, but like Joey said manual is the only way to go in a hot rod IMO.

Powerglyde? Well I see white a few of em at the track. Not to rare fer me I guess

It has to be manual for hot rods and muscle cars, just isn't the same if it isn't

That is drive-by-wire throttle control, it has nothing to do with transmissions

Modern day auto transmissions get the same, if not better, fuel economy than a manual. Back in the 80s and 90s, there was a clear difference because of the sheer weight (up to 200lbs more for auto) difference, but nowadays you can't tell.

Same. I'm looking for a 32v Mustang, it HAS to be a 5-speed. FYI, my F-150 is a 5-speed as well. It has over 321K miles and for two years I drove it daily as a delivery driver in downtown Tallahassee

You know, I was thinking that after I posted it, but wasn't sure. So is there something other than drive-by-wire throttle control? And is that the one that has that stupid delay?

Direct cable, which you and me have. In 2004, Ford switched to drive-by-wire. Past 2008, I believe 99% of all auto manufacturers use it now. Saves gas.

It may save gas, but it's annoying lol.

Exactly my point.

But thank you very much for the knowledge.

Edit: If you don't mind, could you possibly explain the two and their differences? I'm really interested in learning as much as I can about cars.

direct drive- there is a throttle cable connecting the gas pedal to the throttle body

drive by wire- no throttle cable...when you push the pedal you are telling a sensor on the gas pedal how much to open the butterfly valve in the throttle body

AKA, lag lol

AKA, lag lol

yea lag sucks

Raptor05121
04-18-2013, 04:46 PM
To better explain the "lag"....when you press on the gas, the computer opens the butterfly slowly, thereby accelerating your vehicle at a constant rate rather than a swift one of a direct cable. Over a year, it may save you a gallon or two, but its main intent is to reduce wear and CO2 output. But to you and me, it means slow acceleration off the line.

RhinoZ24
04-18-2013, 06:43 PM
I can attest to that lmao.

DarkFox
04-18-2013, 10:13 PM
That's interesting indeed.
And very, very ridiculous.
You know, when I depress the gas pedal, one would hope the vehicle will go.
That lag is the stupidest idea. Manufacturers really switched to that to reduce wear and CO2 output?
Dare I even ask of catalytic converters? Don't those also reduce power in exchange for a "better environment"?

I have drive by wire on mine and I honestly hate it but I like the truck

Exactly, and they make your truck quieter too.

They don't really reduce power, if they do, it is negligible. EGRs are kinda a pain, but Cats do convert some exhaust into harmless H2O. What REALLY killed power was smog pumps of the 70s....anyone remember those things? They were the size of A/C compressors and ran off the accy belt. Did nothing but HOG power for no real benefit.

Or I could, you know, use a muffler.

No I'm saying they make your truck quieter, nobody chooses to put them on besides the government. They're not supposed to replace mufflers.
