Does a bed cover really help with gas mileage?? [Archive]

Hey guys I'm starting to have to make an 8 hour drive every week and I was just wondering if a bed cover would help with my mpg? - 2008 F150 FX4

Hey. Welcome to the forum. Although I have no actual proof on if the myth is true because I don't have one. I would think it would cut down the drag considerably and get u some more mpg.

I'm going to be getting one soon. I've heard from more than just manufacturers that they do increase gas mileage. I don't think it's 10% like most manufacturers want you to think, but I expect it to increase mine by about 7 or 8 percent.

Nope, the Mythbusters on Discovery channel busted that. Said it did nothing. The best way to increase MPG's was with a mesh tailgate.

In my head it seems to make sense that it would reduce drag... I would definitely like to see that episode of myth busters. Maybe I'll check it out tomorrow. I'll probably end up purchasing one anyway. If it improves gas milage at all I'll keep everyone posted. Thanks guys

I thought so too lol. YouTube it, Mythbusters tonneau cover mpg or something like that. If I remember right they used an F-150 too.

I never saw the mythbusters do a test on a tonneau. I saw the tailgate up/down debate. Nothing about covers.

Alright, I found it but discovery blocked it on YouTube and I don't see it on the discovery site. But the cover doesn't help, the mesh tailgate was the best. Also keeping your tailgate up is more efficient than keeping it down.
