Gott's Mod '04-'08 5.4 L

This is similar to the write-up done by Baldyman but since there are differences I figured I would make a write-up for the 5.4 L Gott's mod

This is the simple and cheap way of doing a Cold Air intake without having the make sure you get the ECU tunned to account for the relocation of the Mass Air Flow Sensor. This effectively doubles the intake area at the firewall.

Alright now for the list of items you will need for this

- Approx. 8 inch length of 3 inch inside diameter black ABS pipe (I bought a 36" section from Home depot for about $10 I think)
- 1 4" worm clamp
- Some type of saw to cut the ABS pipe (I used a hack-saw)
- 80 grit sand paper, with some kind of palm or hand held sander if you have one. (makes things a little easier)
- 10mm socket and ratched with 4 inch extension
- Flat blade screw driver
- 5/16 wrench to disconnect negative battery cable
- Black paint (optional)
- Plenty of patience.

Step #1
Disconnect negative battery cable (not really needed but it is for safety and makes sure the ECU will go through the relearn process to adjust for increased air flow)

Step #2
Use 10mm socket to remove bolt holding intake tube down (Circled in red)

Step #3
Pull the snorkel from the fender firewall. You will have to wiggle it around a bit to get it to come lose.

Step #4
Pull the intake tube from the air filter housing. You will get some resistance and it will make a popping noise as it is coming lose. This is normal and you are not breaking anything.

You should now have the intake out and it should look like this (minus the dust of course)

Step #5
Now for the fun part. You have to get the snorkel out of the intake tube. This is where a flat bladed screw driver comes into play. Wedge it between the snorkel and tube and you will be able to twist the two apart. Have patience as this part is kind of a pain. I ended up using both hands to pull it out after it got lose.

Step #6
Now cut your ABS pipe to about 7.5"-8" long, at s slight angle as it does not go into the intake tube perfectly straight (you want to make sure there is plenty of room for it to slide into the intake tube, if you get it to short it will pull out of the firewall when you get on the gas and the engine twist pulling it out)

Step #7
No if you notice the hole in the fire wall is not round like the ABS pipe is. This is where the sand paper and patience com in to play. Mark your ABS pipe about 4" from the end so that you know where you need to sand to. Then get your hand held sander and start going to town.

If you take a look at the picture you will see how far back I have sanded compared to the OEM Snorkel

Also take a look at the profile that the ABS has to have in order to fit into the hole

Step#8
Once you get it sanded down and it fits well (I prefered mine to have a slightly tight fit similar to how the factory snorkel snapped in)
Make sure that you test fit it into the intake tube as well to make sure that everything fits. You should be able to just slip the pipe into the intake tube and then tighten the worm drive clamp down once it is all situated. Then you can either leave the pipe as is or hit it with some black paint so that it looks a little bit cleaner.

I sprayed mine with it attached to the intake tube so that the clamp was painted black as well.

Step#9
Make sure everything is how you want it and re-install the 10mm bolt, and tighten everything down again.

Step #10
Reconnect battery and go through the relearn process for the ECU

Step #11
Step back and enjoy the fact that you now have a more efficient intake by spending about $15 and a little bit of your time. Instead of $200+ for a CAI and a tune that is needed to get the most out of a CAI.

Great write-up Ghost! i'd be really interested in your mpg numbers and whether they go up or down from the mod. i did mine in -10 Celsius weather so couldnt get valid mpg calculations

Thanks, I actually did the mod this past fall and finally got around to doing the write-up on it.

If I remember right I had a slight increase in MPG but not much that was drastic. There was an increase in HP it seems though. Again nothing huge but I could feel a bit of difference. I have an Edge Evo that will be getting installed this weekend that I am hoping will help in comb with intake and exhaust too.

All I did was take that piece off and get rid of it. My intake temp is only about 10 degrees higher than outside temp so its not bad, the only problem with temp is when you're at a stop light.

I noticed a significant increase in throttle response just because it doesn't have so much of a problem getting air to the engine, but gas mileage not very much of an increase.

Great job Ghost! Another successful Gotts I see. I think that's what I'm going to end up doing instead of a CAI kit.
