View Full Version : New vs. used

So I am not going to lie. I am hating the whole new truck buying experience. Every dealership tells me something different and in all honesty I don't believe any of them anymore. I really would like a 2010 and up F150 lariat or FX4. I can only afford these used and many if not all have around 30-50k on them. Last night a dealer tried to sell me a 2013 brand new f150 XLT for 34 out the door but it was a base model with no bells and whistles.

I am at my wits end and can't decide if its better to go new and add on later when I can or buy used and get everything I want right now, but I won't know how my truck was taken care of by the previous owner.

What is your guys opinion? I've never owned a new vehicle ever so I wouldn't care if I had a new one or not. Please help me come to a logical decision.

I say go used and get what you want. As Alex said get a Car Fax before you do anything else on the truck, make sure it isn't screwed up and has been taken care of.

All the vehicle I have ever had have been used when I got them, including the truck I have now. I got what I wanted and am still adding things as I find I want little niceties.

I would say go used and get the things you want in the truck. However, if you are considering new check out truecar.com. For a baseline of what others are paying from all over.
My new Lariat is basically the base Lariat with a few goodies added (nav, running boards, etc.) and I payed invoice minus rebates which made a 45,000 truck around 38,000 before taxes and junk. It was around 42,000 out the door. That's just some baseline #'s for you.

Raptor05121

Wow. Back in 1997, my truck was 16K. Granted it is a base model, from 20s to 40s, is a helluva jump in price.

Agreed, I'm gunna be paying $60,000 for a new truck when today it would only cost me $43,000 lol. And I would say go used and get everything you want. You'll be happier that way an get a better deal. Carfax it and look the truck over really well yourself. Make sure everything seems right.

I bought my 2011 fx4 ecoboost used and saved like 20k. The only thing it had was tinted tail lights and tinted windows, and my local famous red stripe. I told the dealer to throw in the box rails, cold air, and LED tailgate strip no charge. I've done my hood decal, HID headlights, leveling kit, wind deflectors and I blacked out everything including my rims for under 1000. The only thing I don't have is leather but the insurance company will call me when something comes in, god forbid. As for how the other owner drove it, I don't think anyone can drive my truck the way I like. Even the guy changing my oil. The dealership checks it over before they sell it. My truck also comes with lifetime engine warranty. I just can't get over throwing away that first 20grand as soon as you drive a new truck off the lot.

RhinoZ24
04-04-2013, 02:38 PM
That's a pretty good deal right there, lifetime engine warranty. Ever think about blowing your engine? Lmao jk. Sounds like you scored with your truck though.

Personally, I would never buy a new vehicle. I'm not a fan of losing 33% value as I drive out of the showroom.
In addition to that, local people are MUCH easier to deal with than salespeople.

I'm a big penny pincher so I would MUCH rather get the used 2010 over the 33% higher (Plus three years newer-worth!) priced 2013.
But then again, I hate my state so much, I made sure to get a 1995 and evade all emissions laws :D
Plus, it's kind of fun sifting through Craig's List ads. Usually you'll get lucky and find a gem after a few days. I was only looking for about two weeks before I found my gem.

RhinoZ24
04-04-2013, 06:17 PM
But you have to be careful about the scam artists and people lie too still. That's why it's helpful to get a history report of the vehicle no matter how you buy it used.

DarkFox
04-04-2013, 06:21 PM
That's true, but a simple Google search could tell you some general ideas on what to look for when buying For Sale By Owner. Mix that with some decent common sense and you'll blow through the idiots and get straight to those who are just in need of a change for whatever reason.

RhinoZ24

Does it have all the bells and whistles? And ultimately it's your choice. It's your money and will be your truck that YOU drive. Get it if you like it and what it has, and if it has no problems or previous damage.

DarkFox

Yeah, but trucks are not supposed to have high mileage when that new. Most people don't buy a truck if they drive 17,000 miles per year.
Since this person clearly did, I'm wondering why it's being sold. There is still plenty of life in it.

Big Slick

It was a trade in at a dealership.

RhinoZ24

It looks clean and no damage. Go check it out in person and take it for a test drive. Also see if it has everything technology wise that you want. If you like it and what goodies it has, get it. If not, don't lol. Also the Carfax said it was $280 above the suggested price, it's not much but see if you can negotiate it down a bit or get the dealer to throw in some extras. Keep us updated.

Looks good, if you're thinking you're going to buy then bug them about that price, throw on some accessories. They probably didn't even give the guy 20 for that trade. They say they're not going to play games but they're lying. There's no way I got all that stuff on mine if they didn't make money.

Big Slick

The dealer already said they would do 27k out the door. I walked away from it, but I'm going to call again and ask them what the lowest they will go on it. I would like to pick it up for 25k out the door.

I also have my eyes on a 09 lariat with 49k on it. The dealer is asking 29k but I am going to try and knock this one down as well.

I had no clue that these trucks were going to be this expensive when I started this.

DarkFox
04-05-2013, 03:29 PM
$1,300 for my '95 :D

But Ryan is correct, you can't expect a 2010 truck to be much less than $25K when it's only been three years.
If they lose 35% of their value once you drive it off the lot, then three years of roughly 5% depreciation per, it only makes sense that you get it for $25K (close to 50% original value) And that's if it's in about 85% or better condition!
That said, don't let them screw you, either, haha.

RhinoZ24

No worries guys. I was actually looking at not getting an F150 after all. They are just so expensive. I was really bummed until tonight.

Browsing my local dealerships I found a 2011 f150 XLT w/ 25k on it for $29k. Now the last time I went to this dealer they tried to sell me a FX4 for 27 out the door with 52k on it. I'm not gonna lie. That's a little to pricey for that many miles so I passed on it.

Today I went to see if it was still there and found this.
http://www.ahford.com/mobile/2011-Ford-F-150-Arlington-IL/vd/14284812

I'm calling tomorrow and saying that if they will do $25k out the door I will be there with a check afterwork.

I'm very nervous and excited. I hope they take my offer.

My dad has a dealer offering a 2012 with 18k for $29k. It's a base model with no bells and whistles, but the only reason I'm not jumping at it is because it was a rental vehicle. I have heard some real nightmare stories about rental vehicles. I'd prefer to own a vehicle that was only owned by one person and driven by one person.

Agreed, but try the FX4 since its already at a lower price. You just have to know how to play the dealers like how they try and play you. Walking away is good. Saying you found a better price at another dealer is good too. If you really wanna push their buttons, tell them another car brand has better deals, that'll kill em.

What I would do in your case is...

Option A: renegotiate. I would be very surprised if you couldn't make a deal on that truck for 30k OTD

Option B: that's quite a few miles on a '10. I'd throw that one out for the '11 with the more powerful and economic motor

Option C: can't hurt. There's plenty of trucks out there

Option D: edges are nice my mom just got one! But if you need a truck don't compromise.

Go get em tiger! Lol, yeah go for the dealer, if they don't budge, f*** em and get the cheaper truck from Carmax. After getting it inspected of course.

For sure. First thing I'm going to do before I buy any truck is call my mechanic and schedule an appointment to have them look over the whole car and see if there are any issues with the truck. Since most dealerships give you at least 3 days to return the car I plan on having it looked at for those 3 days and pray it comes back clean.

RhinoZ24
04-10-2013, 07:18 AM
Good plan and any updates on the truck yet?

Big Slick
04-10-2013, 07:59 AM
I haven't checked on it lately. I had class last night and am looking at houses tonight. I won't be able to do anything till tomorrow.

Does telling a dealer that you'll pay cash matter anymore or at least work in helping to lower the price? I talked with my parents and they are willing to float me a loan if it will help lower the price of the truck. I don't know if this even matters anymore, but if paying cash means the dealer will drop his price than ill do it.

Jersey_Joe
04-10-2013, 10:40 AM
Well. I would see what kind of deal u can make. The when its all said and done. Say. What can I do for me if I pay cash?

Big Slick
04-10-2013, 10:53 AM
I got a feeling these guys aren't going to budge regardless.

They really aren't out of line on their prices. I have only been able to find 2 other trucks online that were close to this one and all that separated them was a few hundred dollars. The ones I saw on carmax were rentals and one was in an accident. So that explains the lower prices.

RhinoZ24
04-10-2013, 11:42 AM
Don't get either then, especially one thats been in an accident. Try the cash option, and like we said, they'll play ball. Just play the right cards and you can get them to make a deal you can accept.

If the dealership comes down on the FX4 I will get that. If not then I'm going with the 2011 XLT.

BFEB

Which one do you like more?

Big Slick
04-10-2013, 07:47 PM
The XLT in all honesty.

RhinoZ24
04-10-2013, 08:32 PM
Get it then, it'll be cheaper. Only downside is less technology.

Big Slick
04-10-2013, 09:22 PM
The XLT is more money because its newer and has less miles.

RhinoZ24
04-10-2013, 10:37 PM
Oh, never mind then lol

BFEB
04-11-2013, 10:10 AM
I'd go for the XLT. Half the miles would be worth the extra $$$ to me.

Big Slick
04-11-2013, 06:03 PM
I think I'm going for the XLT. I test drove it today and realized a little bonus perk that went unmentioned. The 2011 comes with a backup camera and backup sensors.

Plus the FX4 must have belonged to an ex smoker because that truck smells like cigarette smoke bad and I don't know if the dealer can get that smell out. I turned on the heat and i was like "dafuk is that!?" So I am sort of ruling that one out unless the dealer can guarantee that they can get that smell out.

RhinoZ24
04-11-2013, 06:31 PM
Most likely not. I'd just get the XLT for a little more $$ but less miles.

Big Slick

I went with the 2011 XLT

Never mind. I looked up your window sticker lol. I was only $125 off lol. That's a very well equipped XLT. I think you got a pretty damn good deal!

It's raining so here's one of it at home. I have only driven this truck for 20 miles and I love it. Smooth ride, quiet interior, 12mpg avg so far, lots of room. I really love this truck. I didn't think I could love any vehicle as much as my Mustang GT, but I was wrong.

All city miles? And it's the 5.0 right? It looks like it has a 5.0 emblem from the Mustang GT on there but the picture is too blurry to tell lol.

No, unfortunately 2 weeks ago my 2002 Mustang GT got t-boned after a kid in a explorer ran a red light and smashed into my driver side door. I had a lot of time, money and work into that car. So it hurt bad when it got totaled. I attached a pic of it.

Anyways, that's how I got into looking for my new truck. As sad as it was to lose my baby, this is really easing the pain.
