How can you tell when your shocks are going bad?

Your ride will be very bumpy and you'll feel all the bumps in the road, really badly. How many miles do you have on the current ones?

Hard telling don't know when they were last done if ever changes 176000 miles but I keep hearing a thumping sound in the back of the truck and one I the shocks has a wet stain like where it travels up and down

That's normal, just the oil inside, now if it's excessive or dripping then that's bad. How does it handle and drive? Is it bumpy over normal surfaces and does it bottom out or anything over mild dips? And what kind of thumps and when? Just when you hit bumps or when you just drive? My back ends thumps when I hit bumps and stuff, my shocks have about 61,000 miles on them but are still kicking.

If its leaking oil it's bad change it and it will improve your handling also!

Shocks are normally rated for 80,000-100,000 miles. I just recently changed my factory 98 shocks after 15 years and 300,000 miles.

Leaking shock is bad. Change it. I've also read the same life expe. 80-100. But. If they go through hell in there life.... There gonna go. Drivin easily or what ev u would call it. Lol. Can last a long time

Alright I look in to that and it when I hit a decent size bump it sounds like its bottoming out

on trick i use it push down on your bumper a few times and get it bouncing then let it go. if it bounce more the three times your shocks are pooched.

Just the bolts out and replace them?

Jersey_Joe
03-14-2013, 10:32 AM
Yup. Couple bolts front and back

They are bad if the are leaking oil tho. And the bounce test is good to check your springs! But shocks are on mileage if they don't leak! Good luck and soak bolts with penatrating oil.

RhinoZ24

Yeah they're looking like they have a decent leak, I think it would be a good idea to replace them, especially if you said it felt/sounded like it was bottoming out.

no no fight intended. i was just stating that shocks are meant for stability. cause you said bounce test is to test springs. so if there was no shocks on a truck you would be bouncing everywhere lol. shocks stop that movement. lol i come in peace

There pretty good. Just depends on what kind of ride u want. Rancheros r great off road. But on road? Just make it ride rough

RhinoZ24

Bilstein or Rancho, depending on how much off-roading you do.

And do you have to lift up the back or just stay on the ground and unbolt and install new ones?

Well. No. My best friends step father left it to me in his will. My best friend was in Afghanistan. Also a fello EOD tech when he returned from his tour. He said. " wow Steve left u the lightning? That's awesome!" I made it new again. And did a few things to it to make it rip. And I gave it to my best friend. The man that raised him gave it to me. I did what I thought was right. It should b with his family. It was a rough decision but I feel good about it. His daughter says. This is pop pops truck I can drive it anytime I want. But I Truely believed it belonged with him
