View Full Version : Ecoboost gas milage

Got a 2011 fx4 crew cab with a Ecoboost getting 15.5 mpg. I expected more. It's also going through a long winter here in VT. I have to climb a short hill everyday to work. I use cruise whenever possible and the truck is totally stock. Anyone have any suggestions?

How many miles? Winter blend gas is notorious for knocking off 2mpgs

RhinoZ24
02-15-2013, 01:50 AM
Yeah, and 15.5 is better than my current 11mpg. And that's with gas at $4.32 a gallon here. Is your way to work mostly city or mostly highway?

masonic

I'm getting about 20.5 mpg from my 2011 fx4 crew ecoboost. I've been trying premium, regular gets me about 17 mpg. Only thing I have is cold air.

Just rolled over 6k. I have herd I have to wait for it to break in but I didn't expect it to get worse. Anyone herd of extreme fuel treatment? The trip to work is mostly highway at 50 mph and a short slow down at 35 to go through a village which I mostly coast through... Thanks for your input folks it defiantly appreciated!!!

RhinoZ24
02-15-2013, 05:21 PM
Ok, your mileage is a little low for that style of driving, but yes the engine has to be broken in first, then you will see an increase in mpg's. Also, like what Raptor said, winter blend gets you worse mileage. I've lost about 2mpg's since the switch. After they switch to summer blend your mileage will probably go up to 17.5mpg or so, and it should increase more as your engine is broken in. So don't worry too much as of now. Wait until the switch in blends and if you don't see an increase in mileage tell us.

You guys get winter blends in FL and CA?

RhinoZ24
02-15-2013, 07:39 PM
Yup, I believe it's a nationwide thing, has to do with Federal Emissions Laws.

Raptor05121
02-15-2013, 09:10 PM
^^^ bingo.

Don't put any fuel treatment in your gas. It will increase a bit when it breaks in more and once summer rolls around it will go up as well. Just don't expect 25mpg or something stupendous. Its a 5,000lb truck after all.

I have a 2012 4x4 EB SC. I admit it's not broken in yet, but I also was expecting better than 11-14mpg (reg vs prem). I've had several other brand V8 4x4 crew trucks in a row and all got much better than this. Don't get me wrong, it's still my favorite truck ever.

RhinoZ24

Is that city or highway mileage?

That's what I get in the winter months for all city driving. Mine usually jumps up to 15-17 around town once it warns up outside.

I've also noticed I get crappy mileage for the first 5-10 min of driving if I don't let the ol girl warm up thoroughly.

Yes you have to let them warm up.
I never go out of park until my temp gauge starts moving.

I don't go that far, but I usually let it drop to a regular idle before I head out.

Jersey_Joe
02-17-2013, 11:04 AM
Alex had a good point about this before. I don't let it idle to much anymore. Just a bit to lubricate the engine. Then I'm out.

BFEB
02-17-2013, 11:37 AM
Ya it's kinda a catch 22. Cause even at idle you're still burning the fuel up and getting 0 mpg while doing that cause you aren't in motion.

Life time average 21.8 mpg

BFEB

That's damn good. I looked at my lifetime average this morning and it was 15.9, but 90% of my driving is in the city.

LSU1965
02-20-2013, 04:26 PM
I do about 90% country roads and very little city

Makes sense. Have u towed anything with your truck? I'd be concerned about towing with that high of a gear.

Only a small trailer with a 4 wheeler on it and a few other things to go to hunting camp

Cool. I was thinking about a trim upgrade and going with the 3.31.
What's your truck run for rpm at 75mph?

LSU1965
02-20-2013, 05:46 PM
About 2200 rpm

----------

At 80 about 2500 rpm

BFEB
02-20-2013, 05:46 PM
That's pretty close to what I run. I was expecting it to be below 2000

Raptor05121
02-20-2013, 08:09 PM
Dan, going from that low of a change of gears, you won't tell any difference. I've driven a 3.31 to 4.10 and it was barely noticeable.

I love these threads. If you go on a F-150 forum, everyone talks about how to get the best gas mileage, but if you go to a Honda Civic forum, you see a bunch of threads "how much can I haul" or hitch questions when it pertains to towing. LOL

Haha. I can understand eeking mpg out of a truck, but hauling with a Honda? Really? Lmao

masonic

I'm sorry to say but the only thing my truck has over my Subaru is towing and 3 miles of leg room. That car was amazing I was looking for mustangs and saw it across the road. I actually sold it to a guy who was looking for a mustang and wanted "nothing to do with that ricer garbage." My buddy used his to pull a dodge and its camper out of the mud at craven. It's on YouTube

BFEB

Ecoboost is a scam

What do you have to justify that other than your personal opinion?
I drove an EB for 2 years before I upgraded to my Lariat 5.0 and the EB was awesome the whole time. It got pretty close to the advertised mileage and anytime I wanted to feel like I was in a small rocket ship all I had to do was hammer down and away she flew. I almost went with the EB when I traded up, but decided the $1000 was better spent on other options and I fell for the amazing sound of the 5.0 and its almost comparable hammer down qualities. The 5.0 is no slouch, but I definitely miss the extra 40 lbft of torque and the feel of the boost kicking in.

masonic
04-27-2013, 08:45 AM
^ yeah I have to agree there I live in the country driving gravel and mud and I can still get the advertised fuel mileage. The things this truck is capable of with a v6 has been surprising.

BFEB
04-27-2013, 10:32 AM
It's all about how it's driven. If you drive like a rally champ you'll get crappy mileage, but if you take care of it it'll take care of you. Any vehicle is this way.
