So I just noticed tonight as I had my radio off which I never do, but when I accelerate I hear a whining from my engine, almost like a supercharger whine, just not as loud as I can't hear it with the radio on but I can hear it over my exhaust system. It did it as it was warming up and after it was warm. Is this just a normal thing I never noticed before, or what? 2005 4.6L, 60,300 miles.

Sounds like your power steering box. Only reason I say that is mine did the same thing. It was 100$ fer mine and took a half hr to do. They get louder. Especially when it's warm out

That would have been the last thing I thought of, it whines just from acceleration? Alright I'll check it out then. Thanks Joe!

Ford's have noisy power steering pumps- always have. Its normal to some degree unless it gets SUPER loud. And yes it will be varied on accel since its driven by the accessory belt of the enigne

Since we are talking about whining when I start my 03 5.4 it whines then when the rpm go down it's not as loud when you rev it it whines along with when you are accelerating up to speed but when you are up to speed you can bairly hear it is that the rear end torque converter power stirring pump? When the AC compressor went out I got a new belt after it got fixed it just started turning a lot smoother then it used to.

It's most likely your power steering pump because if it occurs at startup there's no way it's the rear end and also makes it unlikely that its the torque converter as well since you're not moving yet.

What do you mean rear end? Is it a howl or a whine and when does it occur? Just because it sounds like its coming from the rear end doesn't necessarily mean its the diff. Carrier bearings make noise. Could be and axle bearing as well.

If its only on accel chances are its on the drive side of the ring and pinion gear.

Yes. Its an expert job. Definitely not for the don't yourselfer unless you have a good bit of experience and specialty tools. Getting the backlash set correctly can be hard.

Get a flashlight and look really good under your truck. Make sure there's not a prius stuck anywhere.
