Last March I was driving in San Antonio and all of sudden I started hearing what sounded to me like the exhaust was rumbling and then just blew out, it kept doing this intermittently while accelerating only. The very second I let up on the gas pedal it stops. Anyways, I got it to the Ford dealer a couple days later in Dallas, they had it a couple days then tell me it's the front driver side hub assembly and actuator. Well it stopped after that repair. A few weeks ago now, I tried to switch to 4 Auto mode going to Houston in the snow and it wouldn't engage at all. So, back to same Ford dealer the next week, this time they reprogrammed TCM & PCM. 4wheel drive works now, however 2 weeks later the same noise returns. Now I'm hesitant to take back to Ford.
I've seen alot on the internet people saying it's a grinding noise from the hubs, but "grinding" is not what it sounds like to me and I'm not convinced it's from the hubs either. I do think it definitely has something to do with the 4 wheel drive though.
Does this sound familiar to anyone??
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated

Sounds like a vacuum leak in the lines.

I had an isssue with a grinding, under acceleration June last year. Vacuum drops under accel and the IWEs would try to engage and create an awful noise

Last week after I put my truck in 4wd during the snow.. For the first time in months. I got a grinding noise.. the right front wouldn't disengage.

I found a broken IWE.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180107/d3ce2a05602348e5bad505c9a7124d41.jpg
