I have a 2011 F150 with the 5.0, lately I have been noticing a burning smell the most recent being after arriving at marmot basin in jasper I don't think it's the brakes because it happened while driving up to the ski hill but not down anyone have any ideas as to what the smell is the truck seems to be operating fine not shifting hard or idling rough just smells like its going to burst into flames

The parking brake is off correct? And are you running the heater or A/C when you smell it, or is there just a burning smell?

Parking brake is not engaged, had the heat on but just barely and when we noticed it the truck was shut off the smell is only on the outside, kinda smelt like a burning clutch

Does the smell linger?

Yes not for more than probably 10 minutes though

That's 10 minutes after the ignition is shut off, might be longer I'm not sure how long to be honest

Ok something isn't right then. You might have some wires burning, but by now something would've stopped working. Have you checked the oil level lately?

The oil was down a litre and now the burning smell is coming in through the vents.

Well fill the oil up and that might help a little lol. And even when the AC/Heater is off it does?

You may have a leak internally then, could be burning on the block and then make its way into your cab via the vents, even if the air is off.

That's what I was starting to think too, making an appointment for it today

Yeah, you're still under warranty correct? Take advantage of it while you still can lol.

Anyone hear about this policy ford apparently has where it's considered acceptable to have to add up to 3 litres of oil in between oil changes?

RhinoZ24

No, that shouldn't be right, if you're not leaking then there is no way you should have to add that much oil. I had my oil for a year and never had to add any, lasted till I changed it. They're just trying to save money so they don't have to look for a leak. They'll wait till your warranty is up and then tell you, all so they can charge a ridiculous amount to do it right. Tell them to do they're jobs and find the problem. The burning smell is not a good thing and adding that much oil is not natural. Take it back.

----------

And besides, your truck only holds what 7 or 8 quarts I believe, so losing ~45% of your oil is not acceptable unless there is a leak.

Well that's what I thought, ill take it to a dealership I'm more familiar with only tried this other place because it was more convenient

RhinoZ24

Yeah try that, and make sure they fix it, cause "losing 3 quarts of oil is acceptable" is a load of s***
