I did the Gott's air intake mod on my truck today (a 2004 4.6L F-150 XLT, new body style). The idea of the mod is to improve airflow by increasing the diameter of the pre-filter pipe from 3"-2" tapered to a 3" straight pipe. Although this is a 'How-To' for a 2004 4.6 it should be approximately the same method for the 5.4L and some older models.

The Gott's mod is said to do four things for your truck:
1) Increase Horsepower
2) Increase Fuel Economy
3) Improve Throttle Response
4) Sound 'cooler'/deeper

Materials:
-3" pvc/abs pipe 5" length
-3" pipe coupler
-5/16" socket and wrench
-Slotted driver
-Rasp
-File

2475

Procedure:
Remove the filter side of the air intake from the two bottom mount pins and the side wall. Use the slotted screwdriver to unclip the 'snorkel' from the filter housing. The detached filter housing and snorkel will look something like this.

2472

The space where the new pipe and coupler will go looks like this.

2473

Once the filter assembly and snorkel are removed begin bringing two opposite ends of the 3" pipe to an oval with the rasp. Only do this on a out 3" of the 5" length. Once you have the pipe filed down to an oval shape try fitting it in place where the snorkel was and file it down accordingly. The pipe should look something like this after filing.

2476

2477

Once the pipe is filed smooth and fits in place slide it in to the sidewall approximately three inches, then slide the coupler onto that and the filter housing into the couple. Reassemble the air filter housing and tighten up the coupler clamps with the 5/16" socket and ratchet.

After everything is fastened in place it should look something like this.

2478

Conclusion:
The Gott's mod is an easy and inexpensive mod that took me no longer than an hour to complete. I noticed no change in sound below 2500rpm but at higher revs i noticed a marginally deeper sound. Fuel economy and horsepower is anyone's guess, but im skeptical there will be a noticeable improvement. I felt a slightly better throttle response at high revs, and for $10 and an hours work, that is good enough for me. I hope this will be helpful.

Nice write up man, let me know if you do see a difference in mpg's later on. I might do this one if you get some good improvement.

I'm not expecting too much in improvement really. seems like the consensus on other forums is .5 - 1mpg gain, tops. but even if it helps the motor breathe a little better its worth the $10 or $15

Very true, I think I'll do this in a few weeks when I get my schedule figured out.

Will do

might be a stupid question, but any chance of a Gott's mod adversely affecting fuel economy?

RhinoZ24
01-29-2013, 12:15 AM
Uhh it shouldn't, if anything it should be a slight increase cause you have more airflow? Do you have it all tight, no leaks in the connection? How cold is it there right now too?

baldyman
01-29-2013, 08:09 AM
it was tight but i'll check everything again. its a lot warmer here now. and come to think of it, ive been a lot heavier on the pedal since i put new speakers in

RhinoZ24
01-29-2013, 08:23 AM
That might be the issue lol.

baldyman

i'm getting approximately 10.73mpg after the gotts mod

RhinoZ24

What was it before?

Jersey_Joe
02-05-2013, 02:06 PM
What? U should get 12-14 normal. U have a problem. Something is not right. Plugs? Done em? Filters?

RhinoZ24
02-05-2013, 02:12 PM
^I agree, but was your mileagae higher or lower before the mod?

Jersey_Joe
02-05-2013, 02:13 PM
Indeed

baldyman
02-05-2013, 03:42 PM
never checked the mileage before the mods. plugs are maybe two months old. air filter is new. but i havent changed the fuel or oil filter yet. i noticed the milage change drastically immediately after the mod.

RhinoZ24
02-05-2013, 04:38 PM
Change drastically positive or negative?

baldyman
02-05-2013, 04:51 PM
negative. i thought i had a fuel leak at first

RhinoZ24
02-05-2013, 04:53 PM
Get rid of that mod and put the original setup back in, ASAP. Something is not right with the setup you have. If you're sure mileage went down drastically, then that's bad. It should have barely affected mileage, if anything just a slight inscrease, not a major decrease.

Jersey_Joe
02-05-2013, 05:45 PM
Agreed. I thi k u should put all the original equip back on. And see if th problem corrects itself. Then we'll go from there

baldyman
02-05-2013, 06:08 PM
alright thats what i'll do. thanks guys

Any time, and did you put the stock box back on yet?

baldyman
02-26-2013, 06:18 PM
removed the gotts and went back to stock. after a few fillups the gas milage was still the same (as low as 10.3mpg some weeks). however as it has begun to get a little warmer (closer to zero degrees) i have noticed my fuel economy go up to as high as 11.5mpg. after 5 or 6 fillups i have noticed that my economy is always better on warmer weeks than on cold ones

RhinoZ24
02-26-2013, 07:30 PM
Yeah, cold weather blows, hopefully you can try it again during summer with better results.

Jersey_Joe
02-27-2013, 10:37 AM
Why not just get a cold air kit???

baldyman
02-27-2013, 11:44 AM
i probably will get a cold air kit for the spring. figured it was worth trying an affordable alternative

Jersey_Joe
02-27-2013, 03:07 PM
Agreed no doubt. Cheep is good on some things that is. Lol

RhinoZ24
02-27-2013, 07:09 PM
You get what you pay for for all the rest lol.

Yup

RhinoZ24
04-26-2013, 12:28 AM
I'm thinking I'm going to try this next weekend when I have the time to do it. Hopefully it goes well lol.

baldyman
04-26-2013, 11:55 AM
make sure you calculate mpg! lol i might put mine back in if you notice an improvement

RhinoZ24
04-26-2013, 04:38 PM
Will do, and hopefully it's a positive gain lol.

RhinoZ24
04-30-2013, 11:03 PM
Going to do it tomorrow when I get home from school. I'll do a short write up if I do something different and I'll post pics after its done. I'll update you guys on any performance gains if any lol.

when are you in school til, man? my last exam of the semester was two weeks ago

RhinoZ24
05-01-2013, 11:40 AM
May 16th is the last day of finals, so 2 and 1/2 more weeks lol. You're lucky you're already out.

baldyman
05-01-2013, 02:38 PM
ya i guess i am lucky lol. our semesters are about 3.5 months for post secondary

RhinoZ24

Ours are 4 months.

RhinoZ24
05-01-2013, 10:20 PM
Got it done, I didn't take any pictures of the process, just followed your steps. I'll take some pictures tomorrow of the final out come. I filled up tonight so I'll see how my MPG's go. I'm thinking of taking some seal stuff to the edge so it's not sucking any air from the engine compartment.

baldyman
05-02-2013, 08:47 PM
how did it work out for you? any trouble fitting the pipe into the fender wall?

RhinoZ24
05-02-2013, 08:59 PM
Took a lot of filing to fit lol. Seems to work ok. I need to seal the edges so no engine bay heat gets sucked in. My throttle response seems to be much better so far.

baldyman
05-02-2013, 09:07 PM
ya haha i used a rasp to get the rough size and shape. thats a good idea to seal it off. what would you use?

RhinoZ24
05-02-2013, 09:29 PM
Probably just the deal you use for wood, that epoxy or caulk stuff or whatever. I'll have to pick some up and see if it works.

lee reece
05-03-2013, 03:20 PM
I would just use a standard silicon sealer to seal around it Rhino and it will hold good if you clean surfaces well. It will also allow you to get it apart fairly easy if needed. Easier than epoxy I would think!

anything on mpg yet rhino? after a week of transporting scrap metal and towing my mpg was 12.84 w/o a gotts mod

RhinoZ24
05-06-2013, 12:51 AM
Nope, only used about a 1/4 tank so far, I'll let you know of any changes once I fill-up next. Before I was averaging around 12.5-12.6 mpg.

RhinoZ24
05-11-2013, 08:15 PM
Lost about .3-.4mpg, I just sealed the edges so I'll give it another tank. If the mileage is still lower then I'm going back to the original snorkel because performance really hasn't changed much.

RhinoZ24
05-20-2013, 12:00 AM
After two tanks with barely noticeable performance gains, and a loss of around .4 mpg, I'm saying the Gott's mod for the 4.6L is not worth it. At least IMO.

I'm going to try on my '10 4.6 and see what I get

baldyman
05-20-2013, 09:37 AM
rhino made a really good point about the gott's mod that may be part of the issue. him and i both used a rubber coupling in the mod that might absorb heat more. so if you can find a way around that it might be good

Jersey_Joe

Why not just buy a k&n? All that work for a little bit of air? Just doesn't seem worth it. But good luck and let me know how much u gain. Use a whyband gauge to check ur progress

Why spend $300 for a little bit of air? Lol, and yeah the rubber absorbs the heat more then the plastic, noticed that when I put the stock setup back in.
