Yeah winter gas blows, why does mileage go down so much? I'm driving all city right now and I'm getting like 10-11mpg instead of the usual 12-14mpg. And Joe, is my mileage going down too because of my exhaust system since I have no intake system to match the outflow? My mileage went down right after I put it on, but it was about the same time as winter blend came in.

I use motor-craft SB with a motor craft oil filter ( free for life)

Jersey_Joe
01-15-2013, 08:23 PM
Well I haven't put it in the lightning yet. She needs a few more things put back together before she fires again . And then maybe a month er two of suspension work. And the. It's down the street to the track after her first Dyno run and hopefully pullin 10.60's. but yet. Them will have redline. It's expensive. But when pullin major hp u can't afford not to. And all oil samples rakin from my motors r perfect. It's all in the oil!

----------

Free fer life? Booooom. That's awesome

U work there don't u. Lol

Dog. Lol

encfxxx4
01-15-2013, 08:32 PM
Lol I don't work there it's a thing you get when you buy a truck from there, ok I've heard I need to run syn in it do to VCT ( I think that's what it is)

Jersey_Joe
01-15-2013, 08:39 PM
U don't have to. U can stay with the semi blend. It's really all preference Im not a fan of straight conventional oils. But motorcraft won't let u down. Especially if something ever goes wrong and they take an oil sample. Ya know. U can always switch to full. But u can't go back once u do. What ur puttin in there is what it's supposed to have. Ur good bud

VCT is like VTec on Honda right?

Hello all, sounds like you guys are from the NE area. Spent 3 yrs at upstate NY and had the same problem with mileage during winter time. I was told later on that they put additives to the gas so it doesn't clump up or so during winter and thats why the gas we put in is not all gas. Not sure if this really true but it sounded convincing.

RhinoZ24
01-16-2013, 01:57 AM
I'm from CA actually lol, just noticed my mileage has sucked for the last few months since the switch. And I've heard something like that too. Stupid oil companies messing up my driving experience lol.

Here comes the professor!

Yeah winter gas blows, why does mileage go down so much?

Summer gasoline has less pollution requirements, so many companies don't change their blend. Winter gasoline contains more butane, which costs less and increases the Reid Vapor Pressure to help meet the sticter winter pollution requirements, but also evaporates at a quicker rate and is more volatile.

Normal RVP values look like this:
January-March RVP is 13.5+ in many areas
April-September RVP is 7.0-9.0 in many areas
September-December RVP is 11+

Oh yea it does! I let mine warm up 10 to 15 mins

You're not accomplishing much, just wasting gas. Idling for 15 minutes uses twice the gas of driving for 5 minutes, but driving for 5 minutes would heat up the oil/block/coolant much faster. So if you can afford it, good for you. If you want to save money (would add up to a few bucks per year) and decrease wear and tear, put up with the cold for a few minutes and just drive it instead of idling. I would suggest letting the engine idle for at least 15 seconds after startup before moving. Oil is thicker and you want to make sure everything is getting coating prior to engine speed increase.

U can always switch to full. But u can't go back once u do. What ur puttin in there is what it's supposed to have. Ur good bud

While that was true back in the day with big and small block V8s and old style piston rings, this does not apply to vehicles manufactured post-80s. The modular block of most engines is acceptable to switch back and forth between synthetic and non-syn all day every day if you want. This is a popular myth because conventional oil does not have set molecule size. They are big, small, in between, etc. While synthtic all have the same molecule size, most of which is smaller than conventional, which in some high-mileage cars would cause blow-by and oil consumption, thus leading to the myth.

VCT is like VTec on Honda right?

Kinda. VTEC was the first step in variable valve timing. As you know, VTEC actually uses oil pressure to change the position of the camshaft on the intake and exhaust ports, so you have either normal speed or VTEC. While newer engines have DOHC that are not directly connected to the engine, they can variate the speed by speeding up or slowing down the TDC opening/closing, thus giving many different possibilities. Manufacturers do this for maximum economy but it will also deliver power on the top end.

See above. Just more butane which burns faster.

The only upside to E85 though is a lil more power, and slightly less expensive.. Gas mileage sucks comparatively, and harder to find gas stations with e85

I did the cost benefit analysis to a friend Suburban which could run E85 and it turns out to drive 100 miles it was more expensive than 87 octane.
