View Full Version : 3" Exhaust + 5.4L 2V

As I was crawling under my vehicle to change differential fluids I noticed my muffler is on its way out. I'm not about to try to patch a new one in so I'll just do a cat-back like on the Escort. It's way easier.

That makes me ask if it's worth a 3" exhaust now since I found one that I think I like at a reasonable price. I know it won't be 3" the whole way back because of the cats so is there any point or should I just stick with stock?

Oh and no I'm definitely not doing headers. It has stock manifolds on it.

----------

BTW if it's already 3" you can ignore my idiocy. It just doesn't look like 3 to me.

I believe the pipe is all 2 1/2" at least it was for mine and they don't change it much.

I found a Walker parts diagram. It does seem to be 2.5" based on the clamps.

I'm considering this setup:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000JTJ47W/ref=cm_sw_r_udp_awd_cyJrub1ZBH4W5

----------

Bet I'll end up saying "screwit" and putting a cheaper, more stock-ish set on.

2.5 would be just fine. Even if there is a 3" available I wouldn't use it. Everyone seems to think that you always want ad minimal back pressure as possible but that isn't always the case. With zero back pressure your exhaust actually creates a lot of turbulence which can ultimately hurt your HP numbers. Without some type of forced induction to counter it, its worthless. However using the right diameter pipe, the small back pressure created, along with the resonance of the pipe, work together to sort of pull the exhaust gases in one steady direction, improving flow.. Sorry about the rant, just a little FYI.

No problem and thanks for the input. That's why I posted the thread.

I can piece together a similar setup as I put on my Escort for $188 plus tax. Same series muffler (Walker Quiet Flow SS) and aluminized steel piping. I might go that way instead. I'd rather do all stainless but I can't seem to find the piping.

dchawk81
10-24-2014, 08:59 PM
I'm finding almost nothing but 3" in the stainless systems. Nothing OEM size seems to be manufactured in the better steel.

The Magnaflow 15608 is pricey but 3" and stainless from the cat back. As well as being mandrel bent. It also doesn't sound too loud based on the two YouTube videos I found on a 5.4 Expedition.

I'm a bit torn...buy the cheaper setup and be almost stock sound but deal with a lower quality pipe or spend on a truly smooth, all stainless but slightly louder (debatable) and fatter system?

Magnaflow. Really isn't that loud. Just enough to know its there. It's really not that bad. But besides that. They make a great product that they stand behind. I would go with the magnaflow

That's the impression I got from the videos. It seemed like you only really hear it when he stood on the pedal. Otherwise it's mellow or even silent. My exhaust isn't exactly silent from outside the vehicle when I rev it up, but I can't hear it in the vehicle.

I'd get a Quiet Flow SS muffler like I have on the Escort if I could just find the damned piping in stainless. That sucker is SUPER quiet.

Short of OEM stainless piping, it looks like I will save my pennies and get the Magnaflow. The warranty is appealing. At 194k on the Navigator, it's just being broken in. :D

I'm going to try to weld the muffler first and see how that goes but beyond that, I'm really leaning hard towards the Magnaflow.

I feel like if I got that cheaper crush bent exhaust pipe I'd always be wondering "what if" - and I hate that. Hell, even the Escort's pipe was an upgrade from crushed to pressure bent.

If I got this 3" exhaust and put a cold air intake on the vehicle, would I see performance gains? Without getting headers and/or high flow catalytic converters?

5pointSlo
10-27-2014, 04:35 PM
Yes. With a tuber you would for sure. Most of the gain coming from the intake and tuner. Even the most expensive cat backs only produce 5hp or so. That's why I just cut out the resonator and muffler and installed an SLP resonator. Cheaper, louder, same HP gains.

dchawk81
10-28-2014, 03:34 AM

Hmm. Wide open is what concerns me since I romp it quite a bit darting into busy city traffic.

----------

So here's my sketchy muffler. This is why I'm looking at exhausts now rather than later. It doesn't seem or look worn through yet but it's definitely close.

I took a grinder to the old clamp and beat it out of the way. Then I got the exhaust wiggle loose but needed heat to get over the pinch. Wasn't as difficult as expected, but took two people which I wasn't expecting.

Installation was actually the bigger pain in the butt and more time consuming than removal.

Totally melting my bumper. I knew it was close but I didn't think it would even get that hot back there. Especially with that fake tip on it giving some buffer.

----------

I should bring this up with Magnaflow. See what they have to say.

----------

I'm going to contact some local performance exhaust shops and see if they can cut a half circle out and make it look factory-ish.

I guess all I really need is a 4-1/2" or 5" hole saw and file to smooth the edges.

I think the computer compensates since it's fuel injected and not carbureted. Power wise at least it doesn't feel like it's getting less fuel. It hauls.

RhinoZ24
12-16-2014, 01:25 AM
It's breathing easier, more air out means more air can come in. With more air in the mix the amount of fuel needed can go down...supposedly. Usually it's not a big gain at all.

The AFR needs to be the same no matter what. More air in should mean more fuel in.

But this is about exit only since I didn't change a single thing about the intake.

Your intake is pulling more air than your truck can use, so if suddenly more is allowed to exit, more can come in. And that's not necessarily true, the A/F ratio is adjusted to make the engine run as best as possible. When I ha leaves in my intake blocking my air filter, my mpg was about 11 compare to 14 now. The ECU compensated by dumping more fuel to make up for the loss of air and power. But yes you are right with just an exhaust not much will change. I didn't see any mpg gain with mine, well maybe because I floor it too much lol.

I'm pretty sure the point of the throttle body is to pull in exactly the amount of air it can use. No more, no less.

Unless of course there's a *problem* - which fortunately I do not currently have.

As far as MPG gain, I won't really know for sure until I get a long drive on the highway to Maryland. Those are my apples.

I think I'm gunna get my whole exhaust redone this summer, forget the rest of the warranty. Damn thing keeps rattling loose. If I tighten the clamps anymore I'm gunna start choking off the pipe itself. Maybe I can get warranty on that from Flowmaster and then have a muffler shop weld my new system together.

Man! You know. Ur the second person to say that today. I did my own. I'm blessed that I can and did. But I would look into new clamps? Cut a peice out. Make a peice to replace and get two clamps to fix? U seem like u can handle that. I dunno what it costs in Cali to get it done. Flowmaster is there. U could prob go pick it up urself lol. But around here shops want a pecker and three nutz to make a "custom" exhaust. I rolled my ends this time around and kept them hidden. I'm really diggin the look. But u can do it man ! Get ur jacks. Tools. And get under there and go get dirty! Lol

Wait is this exhaust already all new?

Mine came with bands instead of clamps though, FWIW. No pinching.

No jacks required when I did it the first time lol. And it's not just that, with clamps water inevitably seeps out from the exhaust and causes it to rust where all the pipes are clamped together. I'd rather have it welded so it's solid and won't rust like that. I'm gunna get a few quotes from around here to see what it's gunna cost. If its too much I have a coworker that finished welding school about a year ago and I'll see if he'll do it lol.

I'd invoke the warranty first if possible.

That's what I'm gunna try, if I can get a brand new new system through it, it shouldn't be too much for a shop to weld it together.

My Escort exhaust was fully welded and it rusted along the bottom where water laid in. There's a rust line going the whole way back.

I don't think there really is a complete win with the whole clamps vs welds thing.

"Uber"

adverb
1.
having the specified property to an extreme or excessive degree; very:
an uber fancy restaurant.

adjective
2.

Shops that do custom exhaust near us are a dime a dozen and the good ones are not expensive.
