Dads 01 done the same thing and they replaced something in the rear axel but not sure what. At least may be a place to start.

It may be an axle bearing or the pinion gear itself. How much slop do you have from the driveshaft to the diff? Crawl under there and see how far u can move it before its actually tight (rotate). Do you get a clunk when shifting to drive or reverse?

I sometimes get a clunk when puting it in gear but not all the time and no l play in driveshift noticed I need a trany mount though

If the tranny mount is worn... How's the carrier bearing?

The bearing that supports the middle of the drive line. This is were a good visual inspection goes along way.

Its a bit technical and will require using a dial indicator to set the back lash and a torque wrench for the crush sleeve. Your best bet is to have it done professionally. If you don't get it just right it will whine and be really annoying

I replaced the u joints on myrear drive shaft ran a little smoother started feeling some resistance from the front end like it wasnt freely rolling slight vibration coming from under driver side floorboard so I'm going to get the u joints for the front drive shaft and go from there as for the rear axle whine geuss ill have to live with it for now how long u think it will whine oh I smelled something burning yesterday before the the resistance in the front end started its a 1999 f150 4x4 xlt 4.6l 205,570mi all stock

The parts replacement isn’t bad but setting the pinion and ring gear properly as well as adjusting the gear lash is all important or your noise will be back. Check you tube

Do you have manual locking hubs or shift on the fly ones with the knob on the dash ?
