View Full Version : Shifting problems?

Have a 1995 f150 with a 302 in it. I believe the transmission is an E40D. When I am stopped I can slowly accelerate and when it shifts from 1st gear to 2nd it will shift kinda hard. I don't think its suppose to shift THAT hard. I don't know what causes it. And does that mean my transmission could possibly be going out?
(By the way, shifting into the following gears are smooth)
Thanks in advance

If you mean taking it to a shop by service , I haven't taken it to get a service.

Does it only happen when you accelerate slowly as you stated? Or does it if you accelerate faster too?

The e4od does that when its in limp mode. Its shifting with line pressure instead of electronically. Do you have a scanner to pull codes? Does the over drive button flash?

It does shift like that when I accelerate slow or fast. I have a code reader I just need to find some time. I will try to pull a code this weekend. The overdrive light does not flash.

Its probably a speed sensor problem. Codes are the first step though

Was was the limp mode you mentioned? Does it do that because there is a sensor problem?

Not exactly. It does it if there is a problem in general.

That's exactly what my 99 4x4 is doing if I take off just right I can sometimes get it to shift smooth
