View Full Version : Second Hydrolock

My truck has about 415,000 miles, about 300,000 miles on the new engine (2003) after the factory hydrolock took it.

I went outside and turned it over and it went half a cycle and stopped. I checked the voltage on the battery, its 12.8v idle, so I know its not dead. The truck refuses to turn over and I think its got water leaking into the cylinders. I'm going to try to pull the plugs out this afternoon and see if I can confirm my worst fears

---------------------------------------------

I tore it down to the lower intake manifold. Turns out my Bank 2 IMRCs arent connected for some reason. I'm not sure if its a vac line or what at this point, but they're just flopping around in there. I hope thats the cause of the mystery rattle and CEL!

I need to run to VatoZone tomorrow and get the fuel rail disconnects and then the lower intake manifold is coming out.

I took off one of the valve covers to see how well this 300,000 mile engine is doing with oil. It is C-L-E-A-N!! No sludge or anything! I'm happy about that.

http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k227/Raptor05121/20140819_012802_zpsd46inouz.jpg (http://s89.photobucket.com/user/Raptor05121/media/20140819_012802_zpsd46inouz.jpg.html)

Also found my 2-year old 2-row radiator is leaking...so that has to get replaced as well. This sucks because I was hoping to get my tires on this weekend, looks like I'm set back another 2 weeks since I have to drop ~$200 on the engine. The injectors are covered in gumminess. Is it safe to put injectors in an ultrasonic cleaner bath? Hopefully this eliminates some issues and makes it run better!

Does anyone know the Ford Part Number to the lower intake manifold gasket? There is a whole slew on RockAuto and I'm not sure which to use

VatoZone- It is where the Mexicans go to get their chrome and performance parts for their 87 Civic.

I went to O'Reillys and got a new 2-core radiator (still gotta drill it for my efans), new lower intake gasket, 3 gallons of coolant, fuel filter, and fuel disconnect tool. I continued where I left off last night- this morning I pulled the radiator and efans, got the fuel rail off, injectors and lower manifold off. Its sitting in a vat of degreaser and I'm taking my lunch break. Up next I have to clean the engine out, replace the gasket and reassemble. I hope I can have it on the road before work tomorrow.

I think this is the culprit for my hydrolock:

Well I got it all back together. Enabled the fuel pump and turned it over and it started firing. I double checked my work and noticed gas on the intake...one of the injectors wasn't fully seated. So tomorrow after work I have to take the intake off and then the fuel rail and re-set the #6 injector. Grrrr.

Good news and bad news. Took it out for a drive. Runs like ****. Like a misfire/vac leak. I took it two miles down the road and I looked down and noticed my drivers side rear cat was glowing red. I have codes P0232 and P1151.

Buddy of mine says vac leak on drivers side. I guess I'll search in the morning

I can't figure this out. I'm stumped.

08-21-2014, 08:04 PM
The fact that the drivers can is glowing red indicates a severe misfire.. The cat is most likely filling with raw fuel and over heating. A vacuum leak to Mr just don't make sense. That would indicate a lean condition which wouldn't cause this. How old are the cats? Perhaps you have an exhaust restriction on that bank. Try removing the cats and drive it a couple miles. See if it runs better

----------

On second thought.... Have you checked the fuel pressure regulator? Excessive fuel pressure could cause it... Or egr valve failure... That fact that its running like crap kina takes out the electrical side to me...

----------

Sorry for multiple posts... I'm reading the history of this post.... Could possibly be the ecm...

alfie

Cat glowing ? Sounds like a bad cat. U can check engine vacuum at high idle if vacuum is low suspect exhaust restriction. Usually when i see a glowing cat it's done

----------

The p0232 would be an open in the secondary fuel circuit. Check power to and out of the IFS. And down at the pump if you do have power out of the IFS.

Raptor05121
08-22-2014, 07:33 AM
I disconnected the pump reset switch by the pax kickboard to test the fuel rail, so the P0232 could be from me manually disconnecting it. The cats are 2 year old Magnaflow models. I tried running it last night, it does not want to start. It will turn over several times and STOP like its hydrolocked. Could be from fuel. But I did manage to get it running and when it stalled, I still heard the mulittude of "clicking" noises, which I want to say were the injectors opening after the engine was off. The mis-labeled FPR would explain the vac leak, excess fuel, and glowing cat.

Now that I think of it, the fuel pressure regulator, I did not label the vac line going to it, so I could have accidentally swapped it. Does anyone have a picture of what color vac line goes to the FPR on a 4.2L?

5pointSlo
08-22-2014, 07:42 AM
Does the line you put to it have vacuum? It shouldn't be dumping fuel unless there is zero vaccum applied (wot) or the diaphragm is broken (it would have fuel coming out of it by unplugging the vacuum line). The injectors continuing to fire after the engine isn't running is making me think it may be the computer. Crank it till it stops, the pull the plugs out and see if you are actually hydro locking. Does the oil have fuel in it?

Raptor05121
08-22-2014, 08:29 AM
So here are some symptoms:

Truck turns over several compressions and stops, wont start. Feels like excessive compression in cylinders
Pulled the spark plugs, all covered in fuel
Turned over the engine with no plugs and the driver side spat out big splotch of fuel, pax side spit out just a little mist
Cat was glowing red hot on my test drive the other day, synonymous with fuel in the cat
Exhaust was popping, synonymous with fuel burning in the exhaust
Error codes P0232 and P1151. I have cleared them but they have not returned.

This could have been the problem from the getgo. I assumed there was water in the cylinders. It could have been the day I went to go drive my truck, there was excess fuel and not water, so I am possibly back to square one.

Truck is seeping coolant again.

Pulled all spark plugs and coolant poured out of cylinder #4 (drivers front). I emptied them, took it around the block and did a compression check. Cylinder #4 was 160. I then hooked up to cylinder #5 and it cranked up to 80...120....160....180...210 then I heard a POP! and the engine actually tried to start! With NO sparkplugs in it and fuel pump disabled! WTH?? Turned it over again and now cylunder 5 is measuring nothing. 0 psi. Put spark plugs back in neighbors #4 and #6 to see if it is leaking into those and it isnt.

Got the fuel rail and lower off (for the 5th time). Exhaust manifold came off without a fuss (after the bolts being heating repeatedly for 17 years, you would think they would be rusted on). Rocker arms and pushrods are out. Only 4 bolts left and the head comes off. I pulled and pulled and they just wouldn't break loose, so I called it a day. Tomorrow the fun begins
