I have a 2003 F150 with the 5.4 and 145,000 miles. About 2 weeks ago I took my truck to my mechanic for my engine light, cylinders 3 and 4 had a misfire. I had coil packs 3 and 4 replaced, this was on Thursday 8/7, that next Monday my engine came on, cylinder misfire on 4, was replaced again Wednesday, 8/13, and at 11:30 p.m. on 8/16 the light came on once again. The truck runs really rough, but only on cold start ups and once I hit about 2,000 rpms it goes away. Any idea what could be causing this?

If not that's the problem for the rough idle I would change the fuel filter and put some Lucas oil fuel system cleaner in it if it still continues it might be the gas that is bad a I would use different gas ( say you go to Kroger, swich to shell for a tank and see if that helps )

With that many miles it's time to change all the plugs and COP's anyways. That's probably the issue and explains why it goes away at higher RPM's

Agreed. Sounds like the hole isn't getting enough voltage to fire at low rpms but once u spin up the alt... All OK... I would do some plugs. After that if you still have a misfire... The troubleshooting gets real fun...

The dealer it was bought from claims they were changed at 100,000 with motorcraft plugs. Every time the coil was replaced, so was the plug. I'll check the fuel filter out and I've tried the fuel system cleaner, it still idled rough, but it was about half of what it used to be.

Yup, safe bet for sure. You can DIY or pay a few hundred $$$ it gets pricey for these engines.

I found a more permanent fix to the problem, I am now the new owner of a 2013 Toyota Tacoma.

No more Ford? Are you done with them completely or just for this vehicle? An that's not a fix, Toyota is a problem but that's just my opinion, not trying to say your new purchase was a bad idea. I just don't like Toyotas from family experience. I hope you have good luck with it though if that's what you want.

I own a 2013 Toyota TRD sport 4x4 and its a great vehicle and its my wife's truck and I have a 2014 ford xlt 4x4 reg cab and the ford is more comfortable and powerful by a long shot but I'm 6ft and I feel cramped in the yota but yotas are great trucks and I'm happy with both. I'm a ford man through and through but a yota is my second choice, enjoy the yota man.

It's way more powerful because Toyota put an under-powered V6 in it and you have a kick-ass V8 in your Ford.

And call it Patriotism or what not, but I would drive any other American brand before I went with an import. And that's saying something considering how much I hate both Chevy and Dodge lol.

I traded in the F150. I'm definitely not done with Ford, but I got a good deal on this Tacoma and hopped on it. Considering this truck was made in Texas, I wouldn't consider it any more of an import than I did that F150.

My yota was made in Texas also and it's my wife's like I say and I very seldom get in it cause its a little tight for my liking but its still a nice truck and she lives and that's all that matters to me. If they still made the ranger she would rather have that so hopefully ford will bring it back with the Eco motor, now that would be badass.

Hopefully, Chevy redid it Colorado, Ford should do the same to the Ranger. They would overtake the market currently being held by Toyota and Nissan.

Neither would I, but I'd drive American before I'd drive foreign, again just patriotism for me.

That's good to hear then and that's understandable then. I hope you have great luck with this truck and it works for your driving needs. And it might not be imported but the money spent goes to Japan, not the U.S. again I'm biased by my die-hard patriotism. Although at least Toyota does give us jobs.

The ford ranger is the only mid-size truck that can take on the Tacoma's and I wish ford would bring them back and show the Tacoma's up.

Now if they bring the ranger back I will agree, but the only other option was a Colorado, and from what I've always seen, a Toyota will outlast a Chevy.

I've had buddy's that owned Colorado's and all of them were very unhappy with them, I've owned Toyota's and Ford's and they both have there goods and bads but I'll take a ford ranger over a yota but will never buy a Chevy or dodge, just my opinion

I just found a good deal and took it before I had even more engine trouble. If there was a 2013 ranger, I would have went for that, but as we all know, no such luck.

My Escort must have snuck under the fence undetected. It came from Mexico.

And I don't consider plugs/COPs to be "engine trouble" - just maintenance. But if I had to pay someone triple and quadruple digits to do them for me, yeah I'd ditch the vehicle too. That's how I got both of mine in the first place. They needed work.

I'll try to find the write up later but I'd did say it would be different from the original. If I'm not mistaken ford still sales the ranger in diffrent countries.

Here's where the new ranger is comming out in other countries next year. http://www.2014fordranger2015.com/2015-ford-ranger/

They do as it hopefully will be, just as long as it doesn't look like the concept I saw a few months back. That thing looked hideous.
