2006 f150 5.4 liter 2wd. Been misfiring iff and on more when it is wet out. So i changed out all the coilpacks and it seems to rev a little quicker and harder, but breaking up more...??? 80000 miles with original plugs, never threw a code i have owned since day 1.

I am thinking of throwing a new fuel filter in it sooner than it is due.

Ton of salt and snow and rain this year.

I am thinking if throwing the fpdm in it too it is cheap and easy to get to right? Just 1 electrical connector?

Can get plugs done cheap by a friend...

Any thoughts? No codes thrown

Can do the fpdm over weekend probably a few weeks out on the plugs.

I wouldn't worry about it until you change the plugs. Make sure you spray some penetrating fluid down in the holes the day before you change them. They are known to break off. Especially when they haven't been changed regularly.

I would do one thing at a time and accept that I was "throwing parts at it". I would probably do plugs, then filter. x10 on the penetrating oil. If you don't force it, getting the plugs out can go good. Don't hesitate to loosen, tighten, loosen and tighten until it goes easy.

Filter due soon anyway, so gonna fo this weekend and get plugs on my short list to do quickly.

I will. I am guessing just 1 bad plug. Wish way to check it and throw 1 in right now. No way to check a plug while it in the cylinder right?

RhinoZ24
04-04-2014, 01:20 PM
Well if it threw a code it should tell you which cylinder is misfiring. And the cylinders are (if you're facing the engine from the front of the truck) 1-4 on the left side and 5-8 on the right side. 1 and 5 are the front cylinders closest to the front of the truck.

Not a code ever. Seems to misfire above 3000 when u jump on it a bit. picked up duel dilter today going to do in am tomorrow

Nope, there's a special tool made by Lisle for all the Ford 3V engines (4.6 V8, 5.4 V8, and the 6.8 V10). If they break you use it, unless you knock the tip of the plug into the cylinder, in which case then you have to take off the intake manifold. That's not very common though.

How do you know it's misfiring then? The check engine light should be flashing if it's missing.

I know has to get done in next 2 weeks

RexReid
04-04-2014, 07:12 PM
I've got an easy idea: Get it to a shop to diagnose and repair. It is probably a plug, but it is harmful to the engine to run it that way. Don't delay--get it fixed today (like the rhyme?) Your dilemma seems to be money. Think of the money you spend on this one to be an investment.

Jersey_Joe
04-04-2014, 07:50 PM
Agreed

btoolguy1
04-04-2014, 09:57 PM
Not money at all. Getting person to do it. Have to catch up with him. Needs plugs anyway. Swapping out filter tomorrow and wanna try and get plugs done quick, but may be next weekend. If plugs dont do it going to swap out the fpdm then if issues going to mechanic.

Sweet, I've noticed my truck has been a little sluggish on acceleration lately and I think its time for plugs, only thing I haven't done besides differential gear oil lol. But I'm probably gunna wait until the semster is over and do the COP's as well. Glad yours is all fixed though!

Like mine at 66,400 and the original 1 month shy of 9 years old fluid lol. That's on the list to be done soon.

btoolguy1
04-05-2014, 05:52 PM
Mine us too. Brake fluid too i am think. Shicks, loaded struts and brakes upgrade and lines too. Keeping 2 more years.

Brake fluid failing? Why change it? Of ur trading up in two years just put pads on it and drive it bud. The professor has almost 400k on his brake fluid. It'll b ok

btoolguy1
04-05-2014, 07:19 PM
They copper test will change when bad. Ready for rotors and shimmy on stops. Brakes never great since got it with 12 miles on it. Figure the upgrades cheap and fun for 2 mos. wanna get exhaust too. Maybe will make me keep it for 3 years. Not having 4x4 bummed me out this oaat winter.

Jersey_Joe
04-05-2014, 07:48 PM
I'll bet. Take it to the Meineke in Berlin. That guy does the best work around period. Unless u do it yourself. And u always do ur best in ur own lol
But I'll tell ya. My new truck stops way better than my old truck that's fer sure. And it's heavier. They have deff come along way. Rotors and pads will take ur shimmy away

btoolguy1
04-05-2014, 08:26 PM
Already got some upgraded stainless lines for the ends. Thinking of one the kits with slotted rotors- being 2wd its more, but still doable. Brakes may be next then shocks++.

Prob will get exhaust done like it welded, maybe just muffler. Pain to weld without lift.

Drop ur name? Not looking for discount but so he knows u out his name out there.....

lol hearing all off guys I guess I should pull the trigger and change my plugs 103,000 and still going strong

I'm gunna change mine around 70,000 because I've had a slight rough idle since I've had my truck and it's seeming to be a little sluggish lately, but maybe it's just my imagination lol.

btoolguy1
04-06-2014, 05:31 AM
They say 60000+, not the 100k plugs anymore. The rough idle maybe it just being lean for emissions at idle. Unless urs has Changed since u have owned it.

RhinoZ24
04-06-2014, 07:34 AM
It's changed for the better because the maintenance I have done but on hot days it comes back. Plugs are the only thing left lol.

btoolguy1
04-06-2014, 07:41 AM
I got a ton if power back for sure. I treat my truck great and dont beat on it, and do all maintenance but they had worn bad on half. None broke which was great.

Exactly

RexReid
04-07-2014, 05:35 PM
Your gas mileage should go up too. Do you check it? I guess plug gap makes a difference too. Did you gap or just out of the box?

RhinoZ24
04-07-2014, 11:57 PM
The ones for the 5.4 are supposed to be pre-gapped already and not to be adjusted, well if you get the Motorcraft plugs anyways.

RexReid
04-08-2014, 08:10 PM
I think the key is "supposed" to be. Sometimes they are way off. If you are interested and want to know more, gap matters.

btoolguy1
04-08-2014, 08:39 PM
Checked mine all good out if box.

RhinoZ24
04-08-2014, 08:52 PM
The Motorcraft plugs I got for my 4.6 were all within spec except for 1 which was a little too big. I fixed that though. The 5.4 ones are a little harder to adjust and are usually on spec.

btoolguy1
04-09-2014, 02:31 PM
As longs as one on my sp515 wasnt dropped on end by someone they would be good.
