I applied to a 911 Dispatcher Trainee opening in a neighboring county about a month ago. Today they called me and want me to come in on Friday for a pre-employment aptitude test (hearing, speaking, typing ability). Between my 3 year service with the Fire Department, my FCC Amateur Radio license and flying airplanes, I think I've got a leg up on any competition if there is any when it comes to talking on radios. I'm hopeful about this, I've been at fast food for about 6 years now. Fingers crossed.

Thanks guys.

I talked to a few dispatchers online and I think I've got this. I did some typing tests and I'm at ~60WPM, so I should be able to fly through this test. I can't wait for Friday morning.

Got a call today, he pushed me back to monday afternoon due to a family emergency. Which leads me to believe this is a 1 on 1 deal, not a group hire.

Nice. I hate panel interviews, never know who to look at. And there's always the "good cop" nice person and "bad cop" crotchety prick. Lol
Good luck brother

So yesterday at 3am I woke up ****ting water out of my ass faster than a 9mm bullet. I felt like ****. By 6am I was puking my guts out. Couldn't hold any water down. I get to the dipatch office at 12:30. Puke again. I go in for the test, the guy tells me it takes 3 hours. I do it in 1.5hrs. He comes in, looks at the results and tells me I did excellent. He leaves, comes back and says: "cmon back here, lets do a quick interview". So I do (still feeling like ****) and answer some questions in front of 3 people. I think I did alright, because he then took me on a tour through the facility. 7 dispatchers, 12 hr shifts. Starting pay is $10.05/hr for probationary and then $12.20 after that, with all the overtime you want. He said it will take 4-5 weeks for background, etc to come through so he said to keep my phone handy. After that, I drove striaght to the emergency room, barely able to stand up. Blood pressure was 115/40, pulse was 140bpm with O2 down to 94%. They immediately fed me two bags of IV, injected me with some stuff (which I later found out would make my **** turn black) and gave me a prescription. I got released at 9pm. Today I woke up feeling better, still a headache but hopefully able to return to work tomorrow.

Overall, I'm feeling happy about the interview. I hope I get a call.

Thats what I thought. It consisted of: walking on a treadmill for 7 mins, lifting 20 pounds over my head and setting it down again, typing on a computer for 20 mins, and a little peg board where you have to put the pins in the holes as fast as you can in 30 seconds. The lady was astonished because I ran out of pins- she said she has never seen anyone do it that fast

I am back from my first day. What a culture shock. Going from part time fast food to full time office work is....nice. I came home with 4 different 3-ring binders full of paperwork. retirement, investments, insurance, procedures and policies, SOPs/SOGs, and the all-time favorite: the circa-1970s sexual harassment video with cheesy acting. Right now I'm in training with 5 other trainees. We're going over 10-codes, learning the CAD software, etc. 8-5, mon-fri and in a month or two, we'll be split up among 4 different 12 hr shifts and we'll be working the floor. Its nice being able to be in a quiet, calm, friendly environment with creature comforts such as casual clothing, ID access cards, access to your personal phone, and really excellent air conditioning. I am actually excited to wake up and go back in tomorrow.

I haven't got any hands on yet, we are supposed to do some CAD training tomorrow. Basically, its just a screen with a bunch of empty fields that you fill out (kinda like how you registered to use this forum). Name, location, type of event, etc and while doing that, you select the appropriate agency to dispatch to that location and I can "text" the unit by typing in notes or details to be sent to their laptop.

Oh, I think it's a different CAD that I'm thinking. In my field CAD stands for Computer-Aided Design, used for designing parts and assemblies, that's why I asked that lol. But that's cool still that you control everything and send out all the info for the responders.
