So I've come to the realization that when it comes to lighting, my truck is stock...time to change that lol. First I'm wondering if the LED cab lights are any good or use less energy compared to the stock lights? Second, I would like some recommendations on head light replacement bulbs because the ones I have now aren't very bright when I actually get to a dark area with no light. And lastly I'm looking to add some other front lighting, not off-road lights or driving lights because I live in Californistan where all that stuff is illegal except for off-roading which I don't do in my 2WD truck so it doesn't justify spending a couple hundred dollars on those lights and a light bar and install stuff. Maybe just an LED bar or something that's legal on the street? Any suggestions? Oh I don't have fog lights either, so you guys know. And maybe suggestions for other cool lighting if you guys have them. Thanks!! Alex I trust you'll weigh in on this since you're the lighting and electrical expert too lol.

I love hid headlights but every set I've ever bought says not legal in the state of California so you'd have to know where you're at with that. Otherwise you're looking for some Xenon bulbs. Good LED head lights and light bars are expensive. If you have a little too much money you could put in LED tail lights and cargo light. You can go to an auto store and just change every bulb to an LED bulb, that's what I've done, brightens everything up. The back of my truck is all sharp white instead of that yellow white and I have blacked out tail lights but they're definitely still noticeable.
Not sure what you mean by save energy though.

Awesome, those are bright, and I mean something that isn't going to drain my battery because it's brighter than the stock bulbs lol.

Yeah LEDs are the way to go then. They draw less and have a brighter output. Just changing out the lamp costs roughly $20 - $50 each.

Not too bad, I finally started working my new job and since my gf is up north I'll have some extra cash to spend on my truck lol, and I've done just about all the performance stuff I want, finishing up my radio and speaker stuff, now it's just appearance and I want to start with lights.

They do consume less energy (to an extent) but some do not put out the lumens of stock bulbs. I know some guys like to swap out corner/brake lights thinking they have more power. That's not true. A stock 3157 puts out about ~30 lumens. Unless you had a high-powered LED, it wont put out that much, and the downside is your exterior lights use a focal plane to reflect and magnify that light, so they need the spherical light source of an incandescent bulb. Simply swapping LEDs in your taillights will give you less light and less reflective light (candela). The only proper way is to retrofit some LEDs in there that adhere to the same reflective principal. Here are mine:

http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k227/Raptor05121/Lighting/Taillights/DSC_3395.jpg (http://s89.photobucket.com/user/Raptor05121/media/Lighting/Taillights/DSC_3395.jpg.html)

As you can see, I painted the interior black to darken the red tint (without compromising the reflector's job). I have an array of LEDs soldered to a PCB, cut to fit my taillight. I also have two LEDs on the side to accompany the job for clearance issues. They are tied into the main ones so they have dual illumination of brake/turn as well. Overall I'm at about 150% illumination compared to the 30lm of a 3157.

As for headlights, you have to decide how much money you want to spend. If you want lights that will blow away that Merc that passed you, you'll need at least $300 for a proper retrofit of HID projectors. It is labor-intensive (~10 hours, need dremel, glue, and an oven). But it is worth it. Almost 3x the light output, less draw (35W compared to 55/65W), and a cleaner output. I love my projectors.

http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k227/Raptor05121/Lighting/Retrofit/DSC_2173.jpg (http://s89.photobucket.com/user/Raptor05121/media/Lighting/Retrofit/DSC_2173.jpg.html)

Don't even consider PnP HIDs from eBay. You get what you pay for. Don't be surprised when they ballast you paid $35 (which handles 30,000 volts AC current) suddenly catches on fire. I've seen it.

If you want to stick to Halogen- Sylvania makes the Silverstar Ultra in H13, and also good are the Philips XtremePowers and GE Nighthawks.

Very great explanation Alex! Thank you very much. I'm not looking to change taillights or retrofit my headlights, all I want is brighter bulbs of which you recommended some lol. And besides those, any aftermarket lighting I can add that is street legal and isn't too expensive?

No I was wondering if those are worth it. I want brighter headlights without retro-fitting anything. Just bulbs, and I guess taillight bulbs too. I found some Hella aftermarket combo Fog/Driving lights 55W H3 bulbs on Autoanything.com for $65, it's street legal, and in some YouTube videos (from owners, not Hella), they look pretty bright. I was thinking of adding them too because I want some kind of aftermarket lighting up front since I don't have the factory fog lights. Any thoughts on that?

Well its a tradeoff. The three I listed have more luminous output, so they are about 10-15% brighter, but at the expense of life span. Sylvania guarantees the life of the Ultras for a year. I've had some last longer, I've had some die sooner. Technically, the halogen life cycle becomes inefficient after about a year anyway. When I had halogen bulbs, I replaced them every year or so.

Aftermarket lights generally have a piss-poor reflective pattern. Usually they will put a little hotspot somewhere on the road. I would look into LED light bars if you want high-beam (no traffic) performance.

Really? S*** whatever brand the previous owner put in my truck still works after 2 and 1/2 years of me owning it and doing quite a bit of nighttime driving. But they aren't as bright as I'd like, especially when I'm in pitch black dark. So I guess it's a trade off I'd have to take. Which brand would you recommend the most? And the videos made them seem pretty good, like I said they were owner videos not Hella's marketing schemes. And I just want something to add extra light in front of me for 20-30 yards. I want something street legal here in Californistan, and that isn't blinding other drivers so I get shot lol. Just something to complement my headlights and give me more brightness that doesn't break the bank.

I'd probably get some H13 Philips XtremePowers. If you don't already have OEM fogs, those would fill in the gap pretty good, especially if you've got an 04-05 with the rectangular fogs, you can throw some 9005s in there

Awesome, I'll go and find some after my first paycheck. And no OEM fog lights, just the base model XLT with headlights only, that's why I was thinking about the Hella combo lights I was talking about.

Hey Alex, what are your thoughts on CREE H13 32K LED headlights? I just ordered a complete conversion kit for my wife's Expedition from HID Canada in Chilliwack, BC. They say the CREE LED bulbs are American made and last much longer than the cheap Taiwan-made bulbs most kits come with. Cost was $230 CDN + tax & shipping, supposed to be here Friday.

The ones I bought are dual chip LED H13 replacements. They use the stock headlamp housing and simply replace the H13 halogen bulbs with the 3200 lumen 60K LED's. Supposed to be plug & play also. Haven't seen them yet, she forgot to go to the post office and pick them up.

Don't expect much. LEDs require an array of all sorts of reflectors and projectors. Look at Audis, they have a single 25W chip, and a combination of no less 9 projectors and 7 reflectors. The entire back of the headlamp is a massive heatsink just for 3,000 lumens of output.

http://www.m25audi.co.uk/images/audi/a6/new-audi-a6-led-headlights-02.jpg

Putting a single chip LED on a H13 base and sticking it into a parabolic reflector designed for a spherical light source such as an incandescent bulb is beyond retarded. You'll get all sorts of hot spots, glare, and poor cutoff. Here is a good example:

http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f349/axthomson/9ff950ee2b2ad6d9a1ce1f4e4fbf4823_zpsddfa7511.jpg

Most people would get excited about seeing "oooh more light" but there is no cutoff. Its just constant glare. On the road visibility will be scattered, just like an HID bulb in a halogen reflector.

Edit: I see the kit you bought is claiming 3200lm. That is beyond hilarious. Like I said, Audi can barely squeeze 3,000 lumens out of a heatsink the size of your head using $2,000 Osram LEDs. A chinese chip with a tiny little heat sink, you will be lucky to get 1,000lm. BTW, H13s are 1800lm stock.

This is a good picture that shows the problem with the PnP LEDs. You can see how the LED is a directional light.

http://www.wranglerforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=708169&stc=1&thumb=1&d=1390855108

Another guy posted before and after pictures. These are Sylvania Silverstar Ultra H13s low beams (notice the defined cutfoff for traffic):

http://www.wranglerforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=699449&stc=1&thumb=1&d=1390614479

Versus these PnP LED low beams (nothing but glare):

http://www.wranglerforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=699457&stc=1&thumb=1&d=1390614497

He then posts:

"How do i adjust my headlights down? I havent gotten highbeam checked yet but I DID have 2 different cars I was in front of move there rear view window and another tap his brakes a few times ( i was up his ass kinda). I can see into the inside of peoples cars with these so I do need to adjust them. But other then that i really like them. But the high beams are useless and its annoying not having highs, when i hit the highs the light doesnt change except theres extra light at the bottom of the front bumper (like how fog lights light up the ground)"

What are your thoughts on the Sylvania ZXE bulbs? I tried the Silverstar Ultras in my 2010 but I wasn't that impressed. The xZe's aren't anything more spectacular than the Ultras. Just more blue tint to make them appear brighter. FMVSS standards limit to what bulb manufacturers can emit (output wise). I've heard the output on those headlights sucks regardless. It might be worth your while to upgrade to OEM HID.

I know I'm beating a dead horse, but here is some more pics. There is a thread going on in the lighting forum I'm a part of. One of our retrofitters received a PnP LED kit and posted some pics for kicks and giggles.

Both are using an OEM Lexus RX350 projector. Top is the $150 LED kit claiming 3500lm, and the bottom is OEM Osram 85122 HID bulbs (which puts out a true 3200lm)

http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/11/18/0619bb4e5efefb583500a6b011884d7c.jpg

Another member replaced his halogen high beams with a kit. (Pay no attention to the HID cutoff, those are his low beams).

9005 halogen high beams (approx ~1800lm):

http://www.hidplanet.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=37850&d=1416271369

$150 PnP LED kit, again claiming 3500lm:

http://www.hidplanet.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=37852&d=1416271446

You can see how the directional LED is only lighting up part of the reflector.

If you are dead-set on LED bulbs, I could see them being used for an auxiliary light or fog light at the most. As far as headlights, they're useless. You just can't put a light source in a set of optics designed for something else and expect better results.

I hear what you're saying, gut since they're here and paid for already, I'm gonna try them out anyway. If they suck balls I'll toss them (they were only like $265) and go a different direction. Well boys, the light output is MUCH greater than the factory halogens, much brighter and whiter light. The low beams are amazing and the high beams are brighter as well, although the reach of the beam may not be as long. I do need to do a proper aiming though whenever I get a chance and can find a nice level spot with enough room to park 25' away. I'm not sure if they were ever adjusted after the lift and tires were put on. Maybe on the way home from town I'll get a chance to take a pic of the low beam and high beam light output. You can say what you want but they are a huge improvement over the stock H13 halogens and well worth the $265 and 15 min to install them.

You can aim mine after haha

I do, but more importantly - the Mrs. LOVES them, they light up the ditches much better as well - helps spot those pesky deer well before they hop out infront of you!

Thanks but still a bit hard to see. They're about 2x2" on my screen. But hey if they work for you, great! There is probably less worry about traffic up there in the north. Just keep those halogens in your arm rest, I have doubts those dies will last long.

Well Professor, you were right. They lasted about a year before the crappy little teeny tiny wires broke or rotted off or something. She's rocking H13 halogens again (PIAA Xtreme white Plus), a little less light output, but much better focused.

Hey brother. I have a thread about them. They are magnificent. No problems. And they are bright as the sun! Waaaaaay brighter than hids. I have a ton more to install. Just that thing called time. I'm eagerly trying to find it lol. They are worth every penny. Every light in my truck has an F150 leds.com bulb in it. Once u try em. You'll never go back.

Got another question. I've got the cab and a half and I only have the light in the center of the roof(interior lights) so which one should I order? I'd hate to order the wrong ones.

Super cab. Is what it's called. Np. Pop the plastic of and see what u have. I beileve it's the same set up as the map lights. And u may also have a third bulb in the middle. If u have the third in the middle u can get the rear set up. Two map lights and a center bulb. See what u have first Shawn. Take a pic. Post it. And we will go from there bud

Let's just say u will be hated at night by other drivers. I get high beamed for a few secs then I high beam them and they r like oh **** lol. I have never changed any lights over to led but the damn difference is amazing.

Actually it’s not too bad. When I visit my grandparents and dad in Ohio I get high beamed every other time then when I put mine on they shut theirs off. But I can honestly say the LEDs are amazing. The light difference is perfect! Good clear and cool color to them as well.

Yeah the kick theirs down real quick lol. It seems to take people here in WV a little longer to get use to them so I get high beamed a lot still even after a year plus with them

From when my truck went into the body shop from my accident one night about a month after I was driving home and noticed I had a headlight out and it would come and go when I hit bumps. Waited till my order of marker lights came in and when I pulled it apart and became instantly furious because the shop had cut the zipties and left everything hang causing this plug to become loose. Letting the terminals slide away and lose connection. Called my insurance and let them know I was furious and they offered to pay for new ones. But I had already been in contact with F150LEDs and they gave me a way to fix it long before insurance contacted me. Definitely the best customer service be ever had. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180318/e965b02cb86b0cc1ac08191bfc02bb41.jpg
