If it does it all the time. When col remove the belt and see if the noise goes away. At least u can narrow it down to the drive belt system

Also. If it does it at idle. U can pour some water on the belt and see if the noise changes or goes away. If it does them it's the belt slipping on the pullies. Simply replace the belt. If u do narrow it down to the belt system. Spin all the pullies by hand (engine off) an see if u feel a pulley that makes noise or feel something abnormal.

changed the belt this winter. whistle was before and still persists. it doesnt sound the same as a slipping belt, but i could be wrong. it sounds literally like a whistle blowing

Could be a really bad bearing, but if the dealer said alternator that's probably it. Although I think I've heard of the belt tensioner pulley wheel going bad and causing a whistle, but again that was bearing related.

My 2004 FX4 has made that whistling sound since day one, only when it's-15 Celcius or colder, and when travelling, not idling.I would rule out belts and bearings.

Try using a piece of ? Heater hose as a thesis-cope and try to pinpoint the sound with a little more accuracy! Just a thought ....
