Tailgate popping

My tailgate just started making an extremely loud popping sound on one side. I have checked everything and can't find anything interfering with it closing. The hinges look good. Any thoughts?

Which side? And it happens both when opening and closing? The hinges could need some grease.

Drivers side. It doesn't happen all the time and 95% of the time when closing. Only noticed once or twice when opening it.

Try putting some grease on that hinge then, could have just one spot that doesn't have any that causes the pop. And the bottom of the tail gate is clear right, like no debris or anything you might not have noticed before?
