Well I have my to do list for my truck come winter break and am in the process of getting everything I need. I plan on changing my rear differential gear oil. It's 3.55 non-limited slip so all I need is gear oil. I want recommendations on brand. I'm between Valvoline, Mobil1, and Lucas. Thoughts? (they're all about the same price so it doesn't matter to me, just want to know what you guys think is the best brand and what will last the longest/perform the best). Thanks!

Well. I personally have mobile 1 in my diff now. There r plenty out there to choose from. An I'm sure they all work well. But if u want the best. Mobile 1 all the way bro

That's what I was thinking, I know a lot of people on here use it. Just wanted to see if anyone used Lucas because I like their products too.

Ryno. I've used a Lucas product once. Never had a prob with it. Great product. Great company. But mobile 1 amsoil and redline r the only oils I will use

Alright, I'll probably use Mobil 1 then. I like and trust that brand too.

Thanks for the input Joe.

I've heard good things about Royal Purple.

I've never changed mine. Ever. I should probably do that. Joe, do you know how much the 8.8 takes?

I also have the same question Joe. Also, how can I tell what the size of my differential is, google is not being friendly lol. Only thing I can find is that if the cover has 10 bolts it's the 8.8" and if it has 12 then it's the 9.75". Is that correct because my cover has 10 bolts. My axle code only tells me the ratio not the size, but if it helps it's axle code 19 for the 3.55 N-LS. I want to be sure so I can buy the right amount of gear oil.

That's all my local O'Reilly's store has, along with some other brands I've never heard of. Thats why I was asking opinions of the major brands so I can have them shipped to the store. But if Royal Purple is good...

Royal purple is pretty good. Never used or have anyone that has used the gear oil. But there syn oil is great. U def have the 8.8 with 3.55's. plus that's the rear they pit with the 4.6.

But your bolt strategy is correct

Alright will do Alex, but FYI I'm probably not removing the differential cover, just going to use a transfer pump and suck out all the old oil, fill it with a little new oil to clean the gears, suck that out, and then fill it up fully. If you're looking for the removal of the differential cover for the process there's a How-To about it. I think Patrick did that one.

Correction it was done by Scott when he was still active on here. But heres the link. http://www.f150nation.com/showthread.php?t=1153

I was gunna do that originally and might still. But my seal only has 64,000 on it and my truck before was never used for off-roading or towing, the differential still looks good. But I still haven't decided yet which method I'll use. Only thing I don't like about removing the cover is making a new seal. Cause if I f*** up I wasted like $50 on fluid lol. But if you recommend it though.

Yes true, although based on the life of my truck and what I know it has been used for, shouldn't look too bad. The gear teeth should all be perfect, no chips or broken ones.

But sucking out with a pump won't get all the junk out.. Need to pop the cover and just do it..

Very good point, I'm probably going to remove the cover, but like I said, all of my maintenance projects are waiting until winter break when I don't need my truck for a few days and don't have to worry about work or school. That way if something is or goes wrong I'll have time to take care of it.
