All dash lights work fine except in the bottom comer where my mileage and trip are, could it be a fuse or would it be a bad bulb. If bad how hard to replace it. It's an 06 STX

Its a cold solder joint on a 5050-SMT resistor. You can re-solder it to fix it. I'm not up-to-date with 11th gen problems but this may be the same fix. If not, it is a well-known problem you can search for.

I have the same problem on my '05 XLT Cooper. If that how to from the other forum doesn't help, I was planning on making one for this forum during my winter break when I have the time to tear my dash apart and such.

Thanks guys, but I'm not to sure about taking the dash apart myself lol. It probably would not work correct after I attempted it.

It doesn't look too bad. I have the Haynes repair manual too that shows how to do it. Just take off the dash pieces by the steering wheel, unscrew the instrument cluster and disconnect all the wires going to it plus the gear indicator of the transmission. That's the only thing you have to worry about. Then just take off the back cover and locate the broken solder and re-solder it. Then put everything back together.

My air control panel lights have gone out. Would it be a fuse or? The left side started to dull out first then it all went out.

Its a bulb. Type 194. Should be two in the HVAC control.

Thanks man. So it's just 2 bulbs that light up 3 knobs?

Raptor05121

Yes. They use plastic light tubes to refract the light around the controls. Same thing in the cluster.

Ok sweet. So I can just order 2 194 blue led bulbs and that'll work?

Raptor05121
03-11-2014, 05:35 PM
Do you have blue LEDs already in there? 1997-1998 F-150s have blue tint on all the gauges where in 1999 Ford switched to green. I replaced the stock incandescent 194s in my 1998 with LEDs. So blue tint + white LEDs = blue output. If you have stock bulbs in a 1999+, it'll give a greenish color off. Replace with what is already in there.

Yeah it's a 2003 factory bulbs

All you need is one single 194 incandescent bulb. All auto stores carry them, usually in a two-pack.

Cool I hope they have blue. I have to scrape off the green tint right?

Raptor05121

It is a pain in the ass, I would not recommend it. You risk scraping off the black as well. Just get a regular bulb.

Aw man so go with stock bulbs? I'd rather have blue..

Raptor05121

a blue light with green tint, you'll get like a sea blue color that wont match the rest of your lights.

Oh ok I'm sure the green tint won't be hard to get off. I'm prolly just gonna get west coast customs here in town to do everything blue. Temp and compass, and odometer seems like it would be hard to swap!

In order to take the tint off will take some effort. I used a dab of some good olé gasoline, and a razor blade to scrape it off. I didn't have much luck with sandpaper but a buddy of mine did.

But I built my own LEDs. They spot really bad, I didn't cut them or do anything to diffuse them either. On my buddy's explorer we put tinfoil somewhere inside the cluster and cut the LED. That seemed to work. He hasn't complained.

zav, that looks like a 97-98 cluster. why did you take the blue tint off just to put more blue? simply swapping white LEDs would've done the trick. Or get some blue-coated incandescent 194s to get rid of the hotspots.

The picture actually makes it look blue, they are actually purple. It looked better in my head and now I just don't feel like fixing it. Lol

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/03/19/y7y7e6a7.jpgI had to re look but I'm pretty sure my old lighting was green. If they were like the blue on the 4x4 indication I think I would have left it.

You just got to diffuse them correctly. I got my 4x4 switch to look good with the purple, just need to actually take them out and do it right.

Hey Slim. Where did you find that picture of the cluster with blue LED's? I'm wanting to do something like that in my 04 XLT. I figure, since I have to take my gauge cluster out to re-solder my odometer light anyways, why not make some cosmetic changes....

NO!!!!! Our instrument clusters are different than the previous generations. In my '05 there were no broken solders and it was different than the 2003 and earlier clusters. The light bulb actually burned out on mine. DO NOT take off your needles because it will take forever to get them accurate again and unless you have a programmer that can give you the same readouts as the cluster so you can set them then you are SOL. Just a heads up.

Are you saying not to change the cluster bulbs to LED's? Or not to re-solder the odometer light issue? I just wanted to clarify before diving into anything....

There's no resoldering most likely. In my case the bulb just burnt out actually. You can do the LED conversion still. I'm just letting you know to not try and resolder something that will cause you to take the needles off when you don't need to.

Oh....alrighty then. Thank you for the heads up.
Now, as far as that goes, would it be a simple bulb replacement? Or would the whole odometer screen/module have to be replaced?

-I apologize if this has been previously covered elsewhere prior to my inquiries and appreciate your patience. I've been experiencing some trouble with searching/app crashing with "tapatalk" on my Samsung GS4-

Yeah the crashing happens with me on my GS4 a lot too. An for me it was just a simple bulb replacement. The only one burnt out was the one for the odometer/message center.

Ok. Hopefully I can get in there at some point this weekend. It's not necessarily a top priority yet since I don't really drive it at night that often this time of year, but I want to have it fixed come hunting season. :-)

Mine was burnt out for like a year before I fixed it lol. Just get used to it I guess.
