Hey guy I own a 02 f-150 ext cab 4x4 5.4L and it's skipping and jerking baddddd no coil codes replaced egr cleaned throttle body used seafoam

On behalf the battery is jimmy rigged could be the cause for the jerk/ skip? Mainly on acceleration or up hills by does do it around constant speed and main gear changing 30-40 55 and 60-75 rpms shoot to zero then back up causing the jerk idk what would cause this mainly coils I here ppl say but I got 0 codes for that

Jersey_Joe
11-13-2012, 04:46 AM
It really sounds like a coil pack. But u can't rule out an injector. It happins. Run some fuel treatment through it along with a tank full of good gas and see where u stand

----------

Good luck

callmechad
11-13-2012, 11:44 AM
I did some seafoam and no help so I guess I can try that

Jersey_Joe
11-13-2012, 12:09 PM
What the hell is seafoam? Lol

Never heard of that

Its a "cure-all" (aka: snake oil) that cures all your trucks problems (sarcasm). Its nothing but an naptha/alcohol type of detergent that is good for cleaning up carbon deposits, but people also put it in their vac lines, brake boosters, gas tanks, oil, etc thinking it will solve problems. I ran it once to clean out my upper intake manifold and it burned out my Bank 1 catalytic converter. Costs me $350 to replace it. I am a firm believer that the only thing an engine should have running through it is fuel, oil, and air.

OP, I replied to your PM. Its definately an ignition problem, coupled to that P-code. I'd check the spark plugs first and their gap, but its most likely the COPs (I don't think the 5.4Ls have coil packs, do they?) I'm not a V8 guy.

callmechad
11-13-2012, 04:13 PM
Indeed they do just crazy I'm not getting a code for misfire

Jersey_Joe
11-13-2012, 08:04 PM
Really Alex? Coil packs on a 5.4? Yes of course! I think that just made my day. Lol

----------

Cure all huh? From an oil? Nah not fer me. Is that the clear stuff?

Raptor05121
11-13-2012, 08:30 PM
Indeed they do just crazy I'm not getting a code for misfire

You generally wont. I had bad spark plugs and I got a misfire every other second, my truck was skipping and hopping like it was about to puke. Do a search for your P-code. They are generally a wide-problem code, but I can tell you that it is an igntion problem, whether it be wires, plugs, etc.

Really Alex? Coil packs on a 5.4? Yes of course! I think that just made my day. Lol

----------

Cure all huh? From an oil? Nah not fer me. Is that the clear stuff?

Dude I can rebuild a 4.2L blindfolded but all I know about V8s is they have two more cylinders than me. lol

Yeah its clear.

Jersey_Joe
11-14-2012, 04:33 AM
Lmao. Thanks homes.

kollian
11-14-2012, 05:33 PM
I would check the spark plugs I had the exact same problem and no codes at all. I replaced the plugs and wires and it completely fixed the problem. Have fun with those plugs though.

callmechad
11-15-2012, 06:37 AM
Spark plugs hard or something? Lol

RhinoZ24
11-15-2012, 11:48 AM
^Haha, oh yeah. For the V8's, it's a nightmare lol. For the two cylinders on the drivers side farthest back when facing the engine, cylinders 1 and 3 I think, its a pretty tight sqeeze to get to them, it's going to take some time. Plus the sparck plugs are notorious for breaking off while removing them.

callmechad
11-15-2012, 12:25 PM
What happens if one breaks what's that ganna cost?

RhinoZ24
11-15-2012, 01:08 PM
If it breaks you can still get it out yourself, it's just a lot harder to get because instead of unscrewing the whole plug by hang after loosening it, sometimes the ceramic top breaks off, meaning you have to fit a socket wrench in there to get the rest of the plug out. It's a pretty tight squeeze, which makes it hard to work in. You can do it yourself, only cost to you will be the spark plugs and some time/frustration lol. Have fun.

Raptor05121
11-15-2012, 02:21 PM
Spark plug change times:

4.2L V6: 5 minutes
4.6L or 5.4L V8: 5-6 hours

Jersey_Joe
11-15-2012, 06:07 PM
Ryno. Pass is odd. Driver side is even

1. 2
3. 4
5. 6
7. 8
Just so ya know

RhinoZ24
11-15-2012, 07:37 PM
Alright thanks, I was unsure lol. And Alex is right with the time it takes lol.

Jersey_Joe
11-15-2012, 07:52 PM
Indeed. Well. My fx4 only takes about an hr. it's th lightning that's such a bitch. Took 4 hrs. Like really?!? Wtf. Lol

----------

I'd like to consider myself a decent mechanic. But that is ridiculous. Lol

RhinoZ24
11-15-2012, 08:18 PM
Yeah I love Ford and all, but some of their designs it's like wtf were you thinking? Lol.

Raptor05121
11-16-2012, 12:45 AM
I think the engineers at Ford all stood in a circle and said: "lets have a contest: whoever can come up with an engine layout that is almost impossible for an owner to fix on his own wins"

Seriously. The oil filter on a 4.2L V6 is just about touching the anti-roll bars for the front steering rack. Seriously???

RhinoZ24
11-16-2012, 01:49 AM
Well when I needed to replace my front hub bearings, they were connected with the brake rotors, all one piece. Lucky there are conversion kits to separate them lol, yet Ford chose not to do that originally?

callmechad
11-16-2012, 06:37 AM
Wow 4-6 hours Jesus well wish me luck that will be where I start with that and wires

RhinoZ24
11-16-2012, 11:29 AM
Good luck and hope you have a lot of beer lol.

Could be the vehicle speed sensor

callmechad
11-18-2012, 05:27 PM
Ok foud something that could be causin this cam sensor plug is jimmy rigged the plug in part the green wire can just simply be pulled out and the wires are simply twisted together spliced and taped up

RhinoZ24
11-18-2012, 05:33 PM
Quality fix right there lol. That could be the reason for your truck problem, fix it and see if it helps.

Raptor05121
11-18-2012, 09:26 PM
Could be the vehicle speed sensor

That has nothing to do with the ignition

Ok foud something that could be causin this cam sensor plug is jimmy rigged the plug in part the green wire can just simply be pulled out and the wires are simply twisted together spliced and taped up

Again, while I'm not a V8 guy, the camp pos sensor usually is a fail or no-fail part. If it fails, the truck sputters to a stop. If it doesnt, it runs fine. Your truck gave you a clue with that P-code, you need to head in that direction. Check COPs, spark plugs, and wires.

callmechad
11-19-2012, 05:20 PM
Worth a try ;/

----------

I just wanna throw this out there haven't ha a chance to work on the truck from work being as bid as its been by it still jerking constant on days then don't get any at all I just feel it would throw my check engine light back on but it's not just dont get why it wouldn't

callmechad
11-23-2012, 12:26 PM
Replaced all coils all plugs and wires still jerks

Raptor05121
11-23-2012, 02:29 PM
Wow, I bet that was expensive. I would've just ruled them out before buying anything- things can get really expensive that way. Let me ask around and see what I come up with

----------

OP, can you get a video of it doing it while you are driving? Does the engine have power all the way through the powerband when in neutral (IE no skipping, misfiring, etc)? Does the skipping or hopping happen only in a specific gear or what? I'm shooting in the dark, but it might be trans related.

How many miles?

Raptor05121
11-23-2012, 06:35 PM
reply:

Sure he has 5four? 5fours don't use plug wires.

I don't think its the battery. -Does he lose his pre-sets once in awhile?

I don't understand his description in bold. He may want to re-write that part. I got everything else. So,- Mainly upon acceleration or under power would be the fuel filter IMO.

If shes missing under normal acceleration and at its worst right after the shift into OD, - that points to a bad coil and a low grade misfire.
Have him throttle up normally thru the gears and let us know when the misfire is most noticeable when doing so.

That's really all you have as far as determining the problem part easily without a DTC or just taking it in to a dealership and having them pull up cylinder history (mode 6) to determine the problematic cylinder(s).

Also, if he purchased new ebay coils, coupled with a half ass install, that COULD make this type of problem an even worse one. He may have to start over depending upon products used and how he went about the install.

I'd start with fuel delivery first tho. New filter/fuel pressure check.

callmechad
11-25-2012, 06:26 PM
Ur right I have no wires idk why I even stated. That lol an yes it's a 5.4 and not a tranny issue gears change smooth the jerking hoping just started today again around 40 mph with easy acceleration it's like I'm hitting the gas then not hitting the gas pedal then hitting it ect ect it's like a stop n go as u would say its not throwing anymore cel's oh yeah 150k miles

Btw I'll try n do a video

Raptor05121
11-25-2012, 07:36 PM
Have you ever changed the fuel filter?

callmechad
11-26-2012, 04:34 AM
Not since I got it ab a month ago I I'm not mistaken I check it and it was fine I'll check it again

Raptor05121
11-26-2012, 07:06 AM
How do you "check" a fuel filter?

callmechad
11-26-2012, 08:33 AM
My head is in a knot lol million things flying through my head I'm thinking ab the air filter fuel filter not sure about could that be it ?

dixie_boysles
11-26-2012, 08:44 AM
Id change out spark plugs first, and rule that out. Then move to COPs (Coil on Plug)

callmechad
11-26-2012, 03:46 PM
Already done

RhinoZ24
11-26-2012, 03:52 PM
Listen to Alex's advice and try the fuel filter.

callmechad
11-26-2012, 04:54 PM
If its the fuel filter ima kick myself in the butt after I spent all that money -_-

----------

I just thought about this something I shoulda mentioned along time ago but didn't think about it. Everytime i fill up or put gas in the truck my gas gauge hand doesn't move it takes like 30mins to an hour to actually get to where it's supposed to be could that be a hint to anything?

RhinoZ24
11-26-2012, 05:02 PM
Could be that you have a clogged up fuel system. Simple solution, go to your local parts store and buy some bottles of the fuel system cleaner stuff like STP or gumout and pour those in right before you fill up next. That might help, and why you're at it might as well get a new fuel filter if they have them for your specific truck.

callmechad
11-26-2012, 09:07 PM
Ok will do Thursday and let u know

callmechad
11-27-2012, 05:07 PM
Seafoam wouldnt have helped that?

----------

I was doing a good bit of reading and the fuel filter very well could be that do Ima do that how hard is it to change one in my 02 5.4 ? Hard easy? Never done one

RhinoZ24
11-27-2012, 10:04 PM
I wouldn't be able to tell you, I have the 4.6L V8 and I've haven't changed mine yet.

Raptor05121
11-27-2012, 10:34 PM
no. a fuel filter is a screen. there is only so much it can hold before fuel rate gets choked out.

callmechad
11-28-2012, 11:11 AM
Raptor I thought u said change the fuel filter

RhinoZ24
11-28-2012, 11:17 AM
He did and he is, he was just saying that the fuel filter is a screen to catch crap in your fuel so it doesn't go into your engine. He's saying that the filter can only hold so much before it becomes clogged with junk, chokes your engine and needs to be changed. So he's still saying to change it lol.

callmechad
11-28-2012, 11:27 AM
Oh Ok lol I miss read it I'm sorry I understand now he said no as in if it was hard to change lol

RhinoZ24
11-28-2012, 02:19 PM
Yeah, there you go lol. Good luck and I hope it was just the fuel filter.

Raptor05121
11-28-2012, 02:21 PM
You need the (IIRC 5/8") fuel rail clips to release it. Usually you can rent them from VatoZone for like $10

callmechad
11-28-2012, 03:59 PM
Oh god lol fuel rail clips this sounds fun

Jersey_Joe
11-28-2012, 04:39 PM
It's easy bro.

callmechad
11-28-2012, 04:43 PM

RhinoZ24
12-01-2012, 04:52 PM
Awesome hope it runs better.

Hey at least you fixed it lol.

callmechad
12-03-2012, 04:58 PM
Hopefully it Dnt act up crazy how a fuel filter does that

RhinoZ24
12-03-2012, 07:00 PM
Well if it's clogged your engine gets no fuel so it makes sense. But yeah it's amazing how something so small has such a big impact.

Raptor05121
12-04-2012, 09:36 AM
^^ this. Imagine you trying to suck soda through a straw. If you get a piece of ice in there, it will slow down the flow rate. Same thing applies to an engine.

I'm glad you fixed it!

RhinoZ24
12-06-2012, 01:14 PM

RhinoZ24
12-09-2012, 12:36 PM
Well that's good, I think lol. Btw did you replace your fuel filter or did you have a shop do it for you?

Raptor05121
12-09-2012, 02:03 PM
I hope you didn't pay someone to do that, its the easiest thing ever.

RhinoZ24
12-21-2012, 09:17 PM
I think your truck just likes to mess with you lol. Could be a clogged injector, have you run any fuel system cleaner through it?

callmechad
12-26-2012, 08:53 AM
Nah can't say I have but I'll find out what it is now check engine light came on as I skipped all the way to work in charleston almost line it was dieing completely sputtering and like u have to stomp the gas pedal to go

D Roberts
12-26-2012, 09:30 AM
My truck is a 06 and it was cutting in and out not getting fuel would run fine for a while then just die. There is a little box that controls the fuel pump mounted pretty much to your bed above where the spare tire is. Idk if that's any problem your having but it was a dealer part 114 bucks the back side of the box had a hole rotted through it.

Raptor05121

callmechad
01-15-2013, 11:47 AM
Sorry with the late post but I replaced the connector to the sensor and it's still jerking sometimes ugh idk what to do im ab to sell this Dang truck :/

RhinoZ24
01-15-2013, 01:29 PM
I would run some fuel system cleaner through it, check your injectors, and try cleaning your throttle body as it might be gummed up so that might help. Try those and see if it helps first.

Jersey_Joe
01-15-2013, 03:27 PM
Yup. That's a good start fer sure

callmechad
01-15-2013, 03:35 PM
Throttle body cleaned already seafoam ran haven't done gas cleaner

D Roberts
01-15-2013, 04:00 PM
Did you ever check the little computer box I asked about above the spare tire? You sound like your having the same problems I had the box is like 4in by 3in

RhinoZ24
01-15-2013, 04:29 PM
I'm not a fan of Seafoam, for the system cleaner use Gumout or Lucas branded cleaner, I've used both and they work pretty well. Fixed some problems in my '71 Buick that were similar to what you were saying.

Jersey_Joe
01-15-2013, 08:27 PM
Comin in hot wit the wisdom. Ur gettin good kid. Lol. Lucus makes great products

RhinoZ24
01-15-2013, 11:17 PM
Sorta, just saying, the Buick used to be like that, sputter for a bit before it would roar to life. You'd have to gun it sometimes. Bought a giant bottle of Lucas and used it for 5 or so fill-ups and it fixed it for the most part. The rest was just the old fuel system lol.

callmechad
01-16-2013, 09:50 AM
I can try do just Lucas gas treatment ? Put some in then fill up correct ?

Btw robert I can't remember what u said exactly on the box what exactly am I looking for or doing?

D Roberts
01-16-2013, 10:59 AM
There is a little box that have wires going to it. It's runs your fuel pump its mounted above the spare tire pretty much. You have to take it all the way off its 2 or 3 bolts and look at the back side mine had a hole rotted right through it. My truck would run fine then start cutting in and out and and sputtering then run fine and cut out. Sometimes is would completely die but start right back up. Idk if your having the same symptoms or not

callmechad
01-16-2013, 04:24 PM
Pretty much the same issue I can def try it worth a shot buddy thanks for the tip I'll look and try thanks!

----------

Btw gas treatment or fuel injection cleaner?

RhinoZ24
01-16-2013, 05:59 PM
Try both, like I said it might be clogged injectors or a fuel system problem, or what Robert said as he has a good possibility there. But try both as well, one at a time. So two separate fill-ups, whichever you choose to try first, pour it it before filling your tank. Make sure you get enough to treat the whole tank though, usually I have to buy to when I run fuel system cleaner through mine as most small bottles only treat 21 gallons and my tank is 26 gallons.

D Roberts
02-20-2013, 02:50 PM
