Do any of you know what would cause a drive shaft to just fall off? Note: there wasn't a vibration or any funny sounds. There was only three clank sounds as it was falling off.

Snap rings falling out, which since they are under strain 24/7, I would suspect corrosion

On a related note, doesn't this require a new shaft entirely? I know the sticker on my factory one says "scrap if dropped". Just wondering, not trying to freak you out.

True and you know I've pretty much replaced the whole front in so not too rusty up front now the rear end is starting to fall apart. Once I get my truck all fixed up I'm going to start on the body work.

Sounds like the welds broke!

So it's not the welds it was a combination of u-joints wearing and the companion flange yoke.
