I was chatting with the parts guy at ford and he was telling me that the space between the plastic bumpers that is open for the intercooler needs to always be completely open. No mesh, no cloud rider grill, no anything. It needs to be open all the time or else in the long run it damages the engine. I find it hard to believe considering it doesn't restrict that much air flow. Can anyone confirm this or has heard about this long term problem?

Nope, not a problem. I know of a lot of people using them. You need to go back to that Ford mechanic and tell him this: Bernoulli's Principal. The faster a fluid moves, the less pressure is exerted. Which basically means since there is a grille in the way, the air is going to go around it and just go faster. So you are getting less than 15% blockage (I've done the math on another forum) with an intercooler grille. PLUS your truck is stock with stock boost. If you were tuned and running more boost, then I would think about removing it.
