View Full Version : Air intakes and chipping it

drybread

I was thinking of putting a cold air intake for the Ecoboost . And chipping it . I'm not really looking for more power but a little better fuel mileage .
Buddies keep telling me a supercharger but so I really need the more horse power .
Are there other parts that should be replace also if I put the intake on ? Or a chip
What are the benefits of a the air intake or chip ?
Supercharger ?
Are there any other way to get better mileage?

Let me get this straight... Your buddies are telling you to supercharge a motor that's already turbocharged? I don't mean to be rude, but that's ridiculous. You already have forced induction so a supercharger would over boost the internals and blow it up.

As far as the intake and tuner (chip) you will gain a little economy with each one if you drive for economy, but if you like to play at all and do so often you will lose some economy. It all comes down to how you drive when you're looking for more mileage.

Yes. The right tune and intake will sure wake her up BUT ...... There r kits to do both. However. I've never seen one for an ecoboost. Although I have seen the hellion kit for a GT 500. Oh that's right I have one. Lol. Def don't have boost probs. she spools fast and is soooooo snappy. Big power. Keep us posted on how u make out bud. Good luck

stock intake flows more CFMs than the engine will pull. All aftermarket units do is change the sound and add some underhood bling. If you want power, you can open up those turbos with a programmer and gain +60rwhp in a matter of seconds. Keep in mind if you blow something, Ford will look for a reason to blame it on your programmer and deny your warranty. As for mileage, you would be taking one step forward and three steps back. Yeah you might gain a tenth to half a mile more per gallon, but the $400 you will pay to get it will mean you would have to drive for several years to pay if off. So if you want more power, get a programmer. The EcoBoost is already pretty much maxed out in terms of mileage. Just keep your foot off of it.

From other forums and a little research they say 1 gpm increase with the intake . In Canada we pay $3.50 gallon or 1.20/L. So the $500 spent is easily made back. And any saving is the Canadian way .
The chip not so sure of must do more research .

But must talk to dealership and see the opinions they allow . They are easy going enough .

Ever hear of the placebo effect? Intakes are all marketing and trickery. At 60 mph, your truck is turning so many RPMs and sucking in so many CFMs of air, adding so much amount of fuel to keep the stoichiometry correct. Adding an intake is not going to lower the RPMs, nor is it going to change how much air is being sucked in or the fuel being delivered. I've played with filter mediums versus stock airbox in both my airplane and truck. I've never seen anything over a +3rwhp gain (which is negligible in my book and can be accounted to atmospheric changes if anything) and after 250,000 miles on my K&N, my mileage is exactly the same as stock. Not to mention these newer engines are A LOT more efficient than my generation of powerplants. Ford has squeezed just about everything they can out of stock parts. I installed a AFE stage 2 intake on an EcoBoost a month or so ago. He got a whopping .65 rwhp gain! And after driving 5,000 miles, his mileage is exactly the same.

tl;dr- Keeping your foot out of it is going to not only increase the mileage you think you'll get with the intake, but it'll save you the initial cost of buying that plastic tube and magical filter. If you want power, get a programmer. If you want sound, get an exhaust. If you want some underhood bling and the accompanying sticker, get an intake. There is not much you can do to improve the already impressive mileage of these new trucks.

I could charge you $250 for this post and you would still come out on top cost-wise versus buying one of those things.

Bam bam bam. The professor strikes again. Alex. Ly off the college words please. I'm trying to keep up. Lmao jk. Great explanation have a happy day bud

BFEB

I agree with Alex. However, I bought the airaid intake for my EB for the added turbo sound that the stock box keeps in. If you're a gear head and understand what all that whistling and swooshing means it is worth the $200 if you're into that sort of thing like I am.

----------

You're right in saying I can't justify the purchase in a fiscal sense, but I can justify it in the fact that I have enjoyed driving my truck more and more since installing the intake. That may not be justifiable to some (like my ol lady) but I'm of the mindset that if you wanna spend a lil $$$ to enjoy anything more than if you spent nothing on it then go for it and the only person you have to answer to is yourself.

Raptor05121

^^ exactly. That would be the reason to get an intake is to remove the silencer that is inside the mandrel, and hear those puppies SING!

So how about using premium fuel over regular gas. Does anyone have any ideas .

RhinoZ24
10-24-2012, 09:46 PM
Using premium over regular won't do anything for power or mileage, the only difference is the octane rating, i.e. how fast/completely it combusts. All it will do is cost you more to drive. For $3.50 a gallon, that's not bad, makes me want to move to Canada from California where gas is still around $4.50 a gallon. All you can really do is drive with a lighter foot.

Ryan, while you may be correct 99% of the time with any other engine, the EcoBoost is different. Ford recommends using 93 octane when towing or hunting for power. The knock sensors in the EcoBoost will advance the timing in the engine and there is a discernible difference in the power output when using 93 versus 87 octane gasoline. This is only true for the EcoBoost, though.

RhinoZ24
10-25-2012, 01:12 AM
I was unaware of that fact, never had an EcoBoost and don't know anyone personally that does lol. That's interesting that it does that, smart design.

BFEB
10-25-2012, 06:27 AM
Mine also does a little better on fuel with premium compared to regular. It's actually cheaper to use premium even tho its $.020 more expensive. The other thing I've learned about the EB is it loves to drink anything with ethanol in it. I lose 2-3 mpg if I use a 10% ethanol 89.

RhinoZ24
10-25-2012, 10:53 AM
I'm just going to stick with my 4.6L and the middle grade of gas lol.

drybread
10-25-2012, 07:51 PM
I agree I'm was getting 1mpg better then with mid grade . So my truck may never see regular gas . That extra mpg makes it worth putting in premium fuel . Get over 200 km or roughly 130ish miles more a tank . Ford says you average 14 L/100 km in city but I was doing well below that with premium fuel . While Using med grade I'm averaging 16L/100 in city .

----------

Now should I throw some extra weight or tow something to break in engine . I know you should for a diesel . Because diesels engines are all about pressure . My buddy getting the same mileage with his 90 L tank as I get with my 120L tank but his is broken in .

Sry gas is 4.44 a gallon in Alberta , Canada . Thats the cheapest in great white north. Average is 5/gallon some place are as high as 6 /gallon .
That doesn't include taxes

I've seen 120 and still pulling. You'd have to go off GPS after that or have the info screen in the mode to show mph electronically.

Saw a test at the racetrack. First test run. And I'm sure he hit a 10.80-11 at a good 130-140. He ran a no time. But I'm pretty good at guessin track times. But the guy told me over 150. But I never witnessed it. This truck was rippin fast too

Gas today is $1.09/ litre here in central Alberta. This equates to $4.13/ US gallon. Premium is $0.20 higher but in my 13000km of experience with a 2012 ecoboost there is a noticeable difference in power and mileage. Cruising last night at 120Km/hr plus and pulling 11.6 L/100km (20 mpg US or 24 mpg Imp for us Canadians). Have a BullyDog Gt tuner not installed yet (had on my old 5.4) and know another fella with one and has only tryed first "tune". He says it was quite a wicked improvement in power although he has went back to stock tune as he is a Ford tech and knows it will void the warranty if he blows er up!

He'd probably do that, all politicians are in bed with the oil companies, bunch of cheating whores lmao. California they can do what they want cause government doesn't care and we have the biggest market for cars and use the most gas, so we get f-ed in the a by gas prices.

Ok guys get this.
Yesterday I'm in my work truck 99F250 superduty 4x4 with a 7.3 diesel four door.
I'm delivering a load of busted up concrete house pad in my 6x12x3 dump trailer from my job site to a guy that wants it. Amazing how many people want stuff when its free and to top it off delivered for free.
Anyways not complaining I like free stuff myself.
So I'm heading to this guts house and low and behold there is a Dodge Ram 2500 4x4 diesel in the ditch nose first.
So this is a country road with very little traffic if any.
Keep in mind my trailer us full of busted concrete that is heave as hell.
I hooked a chain to my rig( including trailer) and commenced to pulling. However in 2WD my truck couldn't pull the extra weight. I locked her in 4WD and there it us I untangled the Ram from the ditch.
The guy was so impressed that my trick was able to pull the trailer and his truck.
Said his next truck will be a Ford.
I thought to myself Job Well Done.
Another Ford lover born instantly.

Awesome, yeah the 7.3's were Badass, just underpowered cause the turbo was too small. Hopefully that guy is telling the truth and gets a Ford lol. Those 6.7L's are the best diesel Ford has produced IMO. Bigger engine, most HP and torque ever, and finally a turbo that can work well with it.

Even by themselves they make good power. 400 and some HP and ~850ft-lbs. of torque is pretty impressive compared to all the rest of the Powerstrokes.
