    Valvetrain tap?

Any thoughts on what this sound might be? Only happens under gradual acceleration between 2000-3000RPM. 2015 XLT Crew Cab 5.0L V8 3.73 rear end. Noticeable under a load, loudest from 1st to 2nd gear at around 45mph, but can be heard in 3rd as well. Tapping...then ratcheting type noise?

The tapping or pinging as we used to call it was detonation of the fuel. Basically it's your engine saying I need a higher octane fuel, or I'm getting too much spark advance for the compression and fuel charge that the spark plug is trying to explode. If it was my truck, first thing I'd do is run a codes diagnostic, to see if one of your sensors is misbehaving. Next I'd do a fuel pressure test, to be sure your pump and pressure up to the fuel rail is above 32 psi. The ratcheting sound could be a lot of things, I'm thinking it's a rattling not ratcheting caused by the fuel not detonating properly. Report back what you find.
