I know that a cold air intake will improve performance, but could I just replace the filter with a better one for now and see some improvement?

Cold air intake won't do much. Your truck is already sucking outside (cold) air. Most CAI's have open air boxes, and if you drive more city, you'll be sucking in hot air and hindering performance. You can do the Gott's mod (See the thread in the How To's section of the forum) to get more air. And yes, you can just get a "performance" filter like I did. Plenty of options that'll fit in the stock air box. You won't notice any difference really. If you get one, I recommend Autoanything.com free shipping within the U.S., no sales tax except in CA, and they usually have a sale going on. Plus, it'll ensure it'll fit your exact year and engine.
I did the Gott's mod and am waiting for a K&N drop in filter, can't believe how easy the mod was, and how much they restrict the intake.

I'll be towing my travel trailer on vacation in a couple of weeks, will be able to try it out then.
The tow tune in the edge is for 87 octane, and I plan to run 91 while on the road towing, has anyone tweaked the tune for 91 and what were the settings?

Really towing was set at 91 on mine. And on my superchips. U sure pal? That's usually a 91 tune

Either way. Air to file mixture needs to b precise. Mine is set at 14.2. But don't go by me. I'm a little involved and have a high fuel mixture due to bigger injectors and massive air induction.
I'd stick with 87. For the crappy mileage you'll get plus the long distance, you'll be adding about $8 to each tank and with 91, you'll be lucky to get a few RWHP more.
Tuner really help in shift points. I have an SCT X3 on my F-150 with a manual trans and I cant tell the difference between stock and 93 performance tune.
