    2010 5.4 fuel float/sensor Issue

    Back in July I purchased a 2010 with the 5.4 and noticed about a day after I bought it that the fuel gauge fluctuates like crazy and my miles to E also. My driveway is pretty steep so I just figured it was because of that at first but when even when I park it on a level ground or am driving it, the readings are all over the place.
    Last week filled it to about a half tank drive around 50 miles came home parked it in the driveway got in it the next day and it said I like 40 miles to e and the light was on. Didn't stop for gas because wasn't driving to far then about 15 minutes into the drive I look down and it said I had like over 100 miles to E. Was going to just replace the whole pump/float but want some advice from you guys if you or anyone else has had this issue before. Thanks.

    run some good quality fuel system cleaner through the truck first, there was a TSB on the older explorers that told us to try that first before replacing sending unit.

    Personally I don't see how fuel cleaners going to help with a electrical issue, but hey try it if it's cheap enough. But back to mechanics your sending unit is like a old school toilet float that has a variable resistor that changes with position. When they short out, and they do, the resistance going to the gauge goes wonky. It doesn't know if the toilet is full of water, or in your case gas. What we used to do in the old days was pull it from tank, and run it through it's cycle from empty to full while observing gauge. 9 times out of 10, the sending unit had to be replaced. You might be able to swap out just the sending unit, but if your pump has over 100k, pop in a new Motorcraft pump/sending unit combo. Their not cheap, but seemed to last, and work best.
