They are pretty reliable motor. They were first used back in 69 in cars then later in the trucks starting around 81/82. The bigger issues i have heard of seem to be with the ones of the late 80s era with MAP Speed Density computers rather than the later MAF computers. Most the issues were sensors and wire related. Just keep the maintenance up, take care of them, and they are a long running motor. Its from the same motor family as the 302/289 and the older 260/221s. Its a great motor, and what i am swapping into my into my 84 4runner right now.

I've had a few in the past. An 83 F150 on propane and an 85 "Alberta Special" explorer F150 with the 351HO. Great engine, new intake, cam and timing chain and gear set really wakes them up.

I have an 351w in my 83 F150. When I bought it it had an Edelbrock intake on it. I pulled the intake off to replace the lifters and pushrods and notice that the intake does not have a matching opening for the rear water jacket on the head. Is this normal? The intake is a performer 351w.

    Thanks, Tom
