Thread: Belt Squeal

    Belt Squeal

I got a 1994 F150 4.9 300. The belt is squealing like hell when I start it up. It also squeals when it's cold out. I'm fairly certain it's the AC compressor because it starts squealing even worse when I use the AC. My brother is suggesting my tensioner has gona bad. Any suggestions?

That's the first thing I thought if. Or ur compressors a shot or ur belt is kicked. Tentioner is cheap. Len know how u make out

Yeah I just gotta find a new job and get the money together. New tensioner isn't that expensive but the compressor is pretty expensive.

Yeah, try the simple and cheap stuff first before you throw a bunch of money to fix something that isn't broken. The tensioner sounds like a reasonable first diagnosis.

Hell. Hit it with some belt dressing. Worth a shot

That belt dressing works sometimes if the temperature outside isn't too bad. But if it's really cold out (35 and below) then it squeals like hell regardless of what I do.

2004 4.6L. this is probably a dumb question. i have to put a new belt on my truck. do i need to remove the fan assembly to change my belt or will it come off simply by releasing the tension and pulling it? dont want to start removing stuff until i know

Just loosen the tension and pull it off, no fan removal required. Also make sure when you put the new one on that the belt is centered on all the pulleys. Then crank it a few times but don't start it. Recheck to make sure that it's still centered and then you're good to go. Good luck!
